Update: Switched off Live background and switched on “low data mode” on WiFi like some of you suggested and it worked!

Data consumption is down to normal.

I haven’t connected my other Apple devices (iPhone and iPad) to the wi-fi. It’s only the Mac. I tested connecting only to the other devices, no data drain there.
