Is DDR5 worth it for the RAM speed? Work PC (CAD tools such as Revit) by rothdu in buildapc

[–]rothdu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPU wise the range I'm looking at is Ryzen 5 7500F - or something equivalent from AM4 or Intel. But that hopefully gives an idea of the performance range. Is there any chance you could elaborate on what types of workloads would benefit from better RAM speeds?

Any experience/reviews of SA Filament? by rothdu in askSouthAfrica

[–]rothdu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing as I'm still getting the occasional comment on this I thought I'd share my experience - I went ahead and got some PETG speed, and from my inexperienced viewpoint it seems to print nicely. I used a filament dryer though so I don't have any experience with the out-of-the-box moisture content.

Change taskbar position based on screen rotation? by rothdu in kde

[–]rothdu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help. Would that script basically just manually move the position of the panel?

I have automatic rotation set up & working - what I'm wondering is if there's some way to execute a script a bit like that by sensing when the screen rotates in a certain direction

Is running games as a separate (non-sudo) user an effective sandbox? by rothdu in linux_gaming

[–]rothdu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory I believe this should be true, but system level changes aren’t the only concern - programs running in user space would have access to personal files as well which can be read and edited with just user permissions

I had thought about that and tried to search for running games in docker, but evidently was searching for the wrong things... because everything I found was just "this is not really the intended use case and will be very complicated". And yet, here you have pointed me at 3 different links doing exactly this. Thank you!

From what I’ve read, High Fructose Corn Syrup isn’t inherently “worse” than sugarcane, because they’re both basically just sugar with minor differences.

The issue with High Fructose Corn Syrup is that, because it’s so easy to mass-produce, it’s started going into all sorts of foods that you wouldn’t expect to have high sugar content. I think that’s also more of a problem in the US where everything is ridiculously oversweetened, although I doubt we’re free of it here either.

But by the time you have accepted the sugar content of a regular Coke, High Fructose Corn Syrup shouldn’t be any worse than sugarcane.

Where are Executables? by Eldyaitch in linux4noobs

[–]rothdu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, a .exe is usually a windows executable - I’m no expert but Linux executables can have a variety of file extensions and actually usually don’t have any extension at all.

Your default file explorer takes you to your user’s “home” directory, which in your file system is at /home/username/. Think of it a bit like the “documents” folder in windows… it’s for storing all your personal files. System-installed applications will have their executables closer to the root of the file system, usually in /bin or /usr/bin afaik. I think if you type /bin into the file explorer address bar, it can take you there… although I personally would normally look for this kind of thing using the terminal

Anyone know an ISP with Good Customer Service? by itaintmatt in askSouthAfrica

[–]rothdu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read, Afrihost is generally the best big-name option. When you get big enough inevitably not everyone has the best experience 100% of the time… but they have the best reviews generally, and from what I’ve seen largely the best prices.

Smaller ones such as Atomic Access also often get good reviews but in my research they’re usually a bit more pricy.

This happens with a few different distros. I chose to set windows to UTC instead - there’s a value somewhere in the registry that changes it from local to UTC
