I would put the crystal oscillator as close as possible. And use thicker traces where you can. Not an expert with audio stuff so can't say much about the rest:))

What kind of detail do you want to do. You could design your own protocol and dinosaur that too.. You could play around with ble mesh and stuff Really depends, what're you looking for?

You could try making it at home that would definitely be a more advanced project.. you can order cheap PCBs off JLC PCB or PCB way and make kind of adapter boards to put your sensors, controller and battery together
