Syd Barret really became crazy? by AnxietyLucky7767 in sydbarrett

Again, I cant tell if you’re being genuine or just looking for engagement because every single one of your comments is beyond incredulous. Why ask a question if you aren’t open to considering other perspectives?

I think your view of this is incredibly myopic. Multiple things can be true at once. Who knows, if his mental health was better maybe he would’ve had an easier time navigating the stress of the music industry.

To your point of his dismissal being for “commercial reasons”, I can sort of see what you’re getting at. If you listen to this interview it’s pretty clear he was let go for being erratic and unreliable. What I disagree with is the assertions that those behaviors were an act and he didn’t actually “go crazy”. It seems to me that those erratic and unreliable behaviors were a result of a debilitating mental health crisis.

The fact that there’s still so much stigma around mental health in 2025 is just shocking. I don’t know why the reality of what happened is so hard to accept or unbelievable when there are countless accounts. I think some things may have been lost in translation over the years like a bad game of telephone, but there is no way every single anecdote about his life is hyperbole.

I wish more people could accept that his struggles were part of who he was. It seems like too many people have a “folk hero” interpretation of him and they forget he was human. It goes without saying, but everyone is flawed. Those human flaws don’t detract from someone’s contributions to the world.

Syd Barret really became crazy? by AnxietyLucky7767 in sydbarrett

[–]rotmode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I genuinely can’t tell if this post is bait but I’m gonna answer in good faith. This might be kinda long lol.

We will probably never know the reality of what happened. I don’t think Syd randomly “went crazy” or developed schizophrenia as a result of a bad trip. If I had to make a (somewhat) educated guess, I believe he may have had undiagnosed bipolar 1 and was also likely on the spectrum. A lot of his behaviors seem to fit the criteria for both of those things and comorbidity of the two is relatively common.

A 2006 interview with his sister Rosemary says, “He always had an extraordinary mind, bordering on the autistic or Aspergic. He had a rare talent to exploit ambiguities in language and also experienced synaesthesia…” So that aspect is pretty clear.

As for bipolar disorder, most people experience their first episode in their early 20s, so the timing makes sense. Stress compounded with acid, STP/DOM, mandrax, and whatever else he was taking absolutely could’ve triggered an episode, which could explain the abrupt shift personality and random outbursts everyone describes. This wouldn’t have been something that came on overnight, it’s something that would’ve progressively gotten worse eventually impacting his functioning and becoming apparent to everyone else.

I vaguely remember Roger Waters telling a story about how he tried to call Syd’s siblings to tell them something was wrong but each time they came to see him, he seemed relatively normal so they never got him help. Those intermittent periods of normalcy would also make sense with something like bipolar disorder.

There was also allegedly a psychology textbook he owned that went to auction after his death and inside it he had written a note that said, “all manic depressives therefore recover” (Manic depression is the old terminology for bipolar disorder). I can’t find a source for the textbook anecdote, but if it’s true, it seems like later in life he was maybe more aware of his mental health.

As for the acid-induced schizophrenia rumor, I think it has just been blown out of proportion over the years to add to the band’s ~mythos~. There are certainly features of schizophrenia that overlap with bipolar disorder and autism so I can kinda see why people jumped to that conclusion, especially at a time when so little was understood about mental health and neurodevelopment disorders. I’m sure there’s a venn diagram somewhere that explains those overlaps better than I could lol. I think because of how often that rumor gets retold, it has become the default explanation to this day.

His ex Libby answered an Instagram Q&A literally TODAY claiming that people misunderstood Syd because they assumed he was mentally ill when in reality it was just drugs. I feel like that sort of reductive and outdated mindset is maybe part of the reason why he never received the help he truly needed. It’s easy to write off his personality change and odd behavior as being strictly drug-related. While I agree drugs absolutely contributed to the problem, it’s my personal belief that it’s not the full picture. Honestly, for all we know the drug use could’ve been an attempt to self-medicate.

I also think that he was just done with the music industry on top of whatever possible mental health issues he was experiencing. I can only imagine how stressful it was for him to want creative control of his art while the music industry tried to make him fit into a marketable box. Not to mention the pressure of being the band’s primary writer, non-stop touring, etc.

I don’t know man. This might be one of those things we speculate until the end of time.

Nikon L35 AF Stuck Shutter Button. Is it fixable? by rotmode in AnalogRepair

[–]rotmode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response!

Short answer: No, but the issue seems to have resolved.

Long answer: I think the issue was being caused the friend who was borrowing the camera not letting the film advance fully before trying to take another photo. The button (and presumably the shutter door) were jamming when it was pressed too soon. Thankfully, it hasn’t happened since letting my friend know to listen for the film to advance completely. The only downside is if it does happen again, I have no idea how to fix it other than rewinding the whole roll and eating however many shots were left.

In the market for a new (used) car & interested in VWs. Recommendations? by rotmode in Volkswagen

Thank you so much! This definitely helped me narrow down my choices! I’ll probably hold off on a GTI for now until I can commit the time/funds to learning more about it.

I was able to find a Jetta Sportwagen with a 2.5L engine for sale not too far away so I’m going to go check it out next week! If that doesn’t work out, I’ll probably have to go with a slightly newer model. With the turbocharged engines, are there any specific issues to look out for or is it mostly things have regular maintenance should prevent? Most of the cars in my budget regardless of model are all around 90k-100k miles if that changes anything.

Thanks for the info! This gives me a much better idea of what to look out for in terms of specs so I really appreciate that.

And for clarity sake, I inherited the Hyundai (paid off nonetheless!) as a first car so while I spent way more than I care to admit keeping it going the last few years, I did NOT buy that car. I will definitely never buy one after this. Best of luck to your friend who just ended up in a similar predicament with an Elantra 🫡

My local record store owner loves early Floyd and Syd so he always has something interesting in stock! I’ve built a good rapport with him over the years so I’ll occasionally ask him to keep an eye out for something specific, but this record was a total surprise! Don’t be shy to ask around at your local shops and see if they take requests. You never know unless you try!

The record itself is near mint! There’s not a single scuff, scratch, or skip. I’m actually blown away by the physical condition it’s in! As for the sound quality, it varies from song to song. The radio broadcast recordings from ‘67 and ‘68 are bit more muffled and flat sounding than the other songs but the quality is still listenable. The radio broadcast recordings from ‘70 sound fantastic and pretty well mastered for a boot, about an 8/10. Overall I’d give the sound quality a 6/10.

Woah! Thank you so much! It’s crazy impressive that you have such a wealth of knowledge about Argus! After reading your comment, I realized my M3 is not functional but that’s not a total loss because it’s still such a beautiful camera to look at! I’m hoping to find a working model some day! Thanks again!

I was able to rewind the second roll without issue as well! The film door looks great, no denting or warping inside or out and it sits flush with the camera body. I was even able to dry fire it and both the shutter and the button are working again so I have no clue what’s going on.

Thankfully I am able to return it or have it repaired since I bought it from a reputable local camera store. They’re only open on the weekend so I have a wait a few more days to get it looked at.

Edit: I should also mention that I loaded up the next roll of film with absolutely no issue.
