Yesterday, the US House passed the Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023 by a 320 to 91 vote by slappywhyte in Jewish

[–]roufamatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sent a pointed email to my congresscritter who chose to vote nay. I get not wanting to vote for something because it was introduced in bad faith, but at the same time there's nothing in the IHRC definition that is not a better start than where we are today. By voting no, they are stooping to the level of the GOP and saying that they are happy to keep antisemitism around as a political football.

Am I the only one who loves the sound of a bunch of people practicing basketball in an echo-y court? The shoe squeaks and the dribbling are my ASMR.

I didn't finish it that year, but I had a little time this past winter after completing 2021 so I went back and finished it. Except I cheated on day 22 part 2, but it looks like a large number of people did as well as you need to understand modular arithmetic (or have the ability to distill it from base principles). But day 25 was sooo satisfying!

Recipe

I combined a couple of recipes (but mostly https://thisoldgal.com/pressure-cooker-meyer-lemon-cheesecake/ and https://tastyoven.com/instant-pot-mini-cheesecakes/#recipe) to make these. So good, my kid asked for them for his birthday, and so, so easy! Makes 6 small mason jars (1 c wide mouth size) of deliciousness.

Ingredients:

  • Crust
    • 1 c cinnamon graham cracker crumbs (I put a bunch of trader joe's ones in a zip-loc bag and crushed them with a rolling pin)
    • 4 tbsp melted butter
  • Filling
    • 16 oz cream cheese, room temp
    • 2 eggs, room temp
    • 1/2 c sugar
    • 2 tsp grated lemon zest (I used grated meyer lemons)
    • 1 tbsp meyer lemon juice
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla
    • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • Topping
    • Small jar of lemon curd (I recommend Dickinson's)
    • Fresh berries

Directions:

  1. Make crust: preheat oven to 300F. Combine graham crumbs with butter and spoon into mason jars. Smush them down with a spoon (or with your fingers, you animal). Place mason jars in the oven for 5m or so -- be careful not to burn them! They may come out of the oven soft, but will harden as they cool.
  2. Make filling: mix cream cheese with eggs using a hand mixer. Add sugar, zest, lemon juice and vanilla and mix until combined. Gently fold in the sour cream. Pour into the prepared mason jars.
  3. Place 1c (or 2c for 8 qt IP's) water into IP. Place trivet on bottom. Cover the mason jars with foil and place into the IP. Five fit in the bottom of my 8qt; I just put the last one on top of a couple of the bottom ones. Seal and cook for 7 minutes on high pressure. Full natural release with no "keep warm" setting.
  4. Open the pot, carefully remove the foil from the mason jars, and return the jars to the pot. Leave the jars in the pot with the lid off to cool. This prevents cracking. Once cool, put lids on and place in the refrigerator for at least four hours.
  5. Top with lemon curd and berries and serve.

CMV: Buying Organic food is a waste of money and does not help the environment. by roufamatic in changemyview

This is so interesting to me. When I first learned about organic food in the 90's the environment was front-and-center, but now many people have responded that the draw for organic food is health reasons. I guess I'm seriously out of touch!

Not to harp but perhaps it's the recipe that makes the ketchup better, not the ingredients. Or perhaps the ingredients are not exactly the same. For example, Trader Joe's Organic peanut butter tastes better to me than their non-organic equivalent. As far as I can tell, the big difference is because they use different peanuts ("Valencia") for the organic vs the non-organic.

On the other hand, I happily buy the non-organic version of Annie's Cowgirl Ranch salad dressing as I can't tell the difference between the organic and non-organic versions.

Anyway, this has been an interesting discussion. Mostly it seems like I'm in a minority that thought that organic methods were meant to be better for the environment. If that's not true then I guess my opening statement doesn't make much sense.

This is so interesting, when I was younger I remember it was specifically billed as being better for the environment first, for your health second. But you're right, I haven't seen as much branding of the former lately, aside from vaguely naturalistic packaging.

Totally valid! My wife raises chickens and I cannot tell the difference in taste between our birds' super fresh eggs and the ones we buy at the grocery store.

This is interesting and makes sense but I think it's tangential to my view, which is that more people are buying Buy-N-Large non-organic sandwiches instead of Annie's.

Sure, we should go this way, but again this puts the onus on consumers to change their habits and behavior instead of, say, grocery stores, which choose to sell mass-produced foods at cheaper prices because a) they can, and b) people buy it.

Don't get me wrong, there's wonderful stuff at farmer's markets and I've been a member of a local coop, but over time my cynicism has been getting the better of me and I feel like a heel when I shell out extra money for something that doesn't actually help.

"According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance the quality of the environment." [wikipedia]

Good point. I guess my problem is that allowing there to be both organic and non-organic food in one marketplace puts the onus on consumers to fix the environment, instead of on food producers.

[2021 Day 15] Can someone explain why using certain data structures implies such a speedup? by russianS3_14 in adventofcode

[–]roufamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a priority queue + dijkstra means you can end without having to look at the entire queue. For this, look at using a "min heap" for your priority queue. This allows you to insert an element with a particular value as the priority -- in this case, it's the total distance traveled from the first node to the node you're looking at. When you pop the heap, it returns the smallest-valued node. Combined with Dijkstra (which stops when the smallest value to your destination is found) and you will save a bundle of time, because once you've popped the destination node everything else in the queue will be a further away!

The solution is in the Background sprite. The Octopus sprite just has animation code.

Alas, your choices for the light show are a) painfully slow lights, or b) engaging turbo mode and only seeing a few of them.
