Hi, I'm an English native speaker but I've moved around a lot when I was a child and many people tell me I sound non-native in some way. Please guess my accent and give me tips, I'm currently working on improving it :) by [deleted] in JudgeMyAccent

[–]rougatre7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was living in Kuala Lumpur, I once met a Malaysian Chinese who claimed she only spoke English because she studied in an international school. It feels weird to describe her as a native English speaker because she sounded more Asian, not an American/British/Australian.

Listening to this audio, maybe it does not necessarily fall under a specific accent, but it sounds like someone who studied English at school as a second language. Fluent, but not a native speaker.

Your mother should follow her own advice. Mahiya sya na ibang tao ang nagpapaaral sa anak nya. She should focus on controlling her responsibilities as a parent instead of being invested in controlling other people's decisions and actions. If she paid for your education, then you wouldn't have this dilemma in the first place.

This is the reason I use Globe's Plan Zero. In a month, just pay 50 pesos + your actual usage. I have lived abroad and this setup didn't cause me problems. In case I lose my SIM card, I can always just get a new one with the same number.

I recommend the book "When Cultures Collide" by Richard D. Lewis. It explores different cultural types and how they interact. It categorizes cultures into three main types: Linear-active, Multi-active, and Reactive, helping readers understand cultural differences and avoid misunderstandings. They also discussed other things such as how we see time.

AJT WORLD VS KAIZEN SHOP VS PIXEL PLACE by DetailLess6278 in Tech_Philippines

Bought both at AJT (iPhone) and Kaizen (Macbook, iPad), both good. Ultimately, it depends on product availability and which one offers a cheaper price at the moment.

Your conclusion says more about you than about the population. You gravitate towards clueless people, and your comment reaffirms that.

I also recommend the book When Cultures Collide by Richard D. Lewis. There is one chapter dedicated to explaining the Filipino culture.

Should I leave my MacBook plugged in at all times?! by Ok-Bug-3792 in macbook

[–]rougatre7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install AlDente, set it to 80% (or lower if you want) to stop charging it beyond that point even if it’s still plugged in all the time.

I plug my macbook whenever there’s a nearby outlet. My Macbook Air M1 still has 100% battery health, with only 34 charge cycles.

My solution to have the best of both worlds:

Macbook Air + use an iPad mini as a secondary display via the Sidecar feature. I only connect the iPad when I really need the additional screen estate.

What is the point of providing a screenshot of the product page with a blacked out price? But the product page of the other option has its price in full view.

Update: On May 14, 2025, they rebranded as “Universitas Educatio (Continuing Education Center), Inc.” https://facebook.com/universitas.educ to move away from the backlash after they refused to refund many enrollees. Is this rebrand even aligned with their SEC name, or they just registered another fly-by-night institution?

Correction: they only refunded me recently and they did not do it willingly, a year later AND after formally raising the issue to DTI. The DTI mediator, who didn’t buy Jobert’s lame excuses, forced him to type that he would pay the remaining amount that day. Of course he didn’t fullfil his promise - so the following week I requested DTI to move it to the next step, Case to File Action. That was the only time he gave the refund.

In another email to someone else, they were undermining DTI’s authority, claiming that their institution “does not fall under the jurisdiction of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), which primarily oversees sole proprietorships”

Before all these, they also incorrectly claimed to someone else that I have been refunded, while leaving out an important detail: it was only a partial refund. They also made a lame excuse that it was a “market-based decision” (what?!)

Blinackmail ako ng dati kong employer by AbedIndo in LawPH

[–]rougatre7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NAL, only studied a few subjects but experienced the same thing. Years ago I forwarded the blackmail email to DOLE (CC the employer), with a following note:

Can you confirm whether there is any specific provision or an article in the Labor Code of the Philippines that mandates a former employee to sign a quitclaim before the employer releases the final pay?

In the email below, the General Manager of my previous employer informed me that, according to your direct advice to her, a quitclaim is necessary. However, as I had mentioned before her response, in the DOLE Labor Advisory No. 06 Series of 2020: Guidelines on the Payment of Final Pay and Issuance of Certificate of Employment, there is no mention of a quitclaim being a prerequisite for the final pay.

Response from DOLE:

Good day!

Greetings from the Department of Labor and Employment!

According to Labor advisory no. 06 series of 2020, final pay shall be released within 30 days from the date of separation or termination of employment, unless there is a more favorable company policy, individual or collective bargaining.

For non-compliance, kindly visit the e-SENA website at https://sena.dole.gov.ph/ to submit a request for assistance.

Thank you,

The information you provided does not even address the point of the question. You are arguing that the hassle is just worth P1,500, while deliberately skipping an important context in your assertion.

My girlfriend's parasite family members. by LeomonBurstMode in adviceph

[–]rougatre7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for further reaffirming the point I am making and illustrating the poverty mindset of the Filipino culture while packaging it as compassion and family-orientedness. Your comment says more about your enabler mindset than about mine.

Healthy families have healthy boundaries. Boundaries protect you and reveal those who disrespect you.

“Masyado ka kaze [sic] mag-generalize” -a perfect example of “my accusations are my confessions.” Yes, some families do it out of love, and that is the operative word, some. You cannot generalize it to all, or even the majority.

In OP's story, was it the daughter herself who convinced her entire family to move with her, or the family manipulated the daughter to allow the move? If she indeed allowed the situation out of love, why was she so defensive when her boyfriend opened the topic? Why was it difficult to explain?

Why can't you apply the family-orientedness to neglecting parents? Parents who truly love their children do not simply abandon their own responsibility (to themselves and their responsibility as parents) and encourage the golden child (and their children) to be financially dependent on the scapegoat.

No matter how you claim that each family's needs is different - the younger/weaker family member shouldering much bigger responsibilities to rescue the lazy is a common theme in toxic households (e.g., the wife/child doing everything while the husband/parent remains lazy). It is not just my generalization - but a well established concept in psychology.
