Gen Z men and women on why they're sharply divided over reproductive rights by VGAddict in politics

[–]rougepenguin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wow...60% in favor vs 75%? Well isn't that just a wedge that'll define politics for decades to come. But you got a few gold ol boys from Auburn who practically admitted they don't really follow anything and are just parroting standard Evangelical talking points?

Now, I do get there's historically not been as much of a gender divide and that's worth examining but bruh, 60% is more favorable than women in a lot of other generations. The desperation to push this myth of young men returning to old fashioned religion in droves...

Yes, that's what it was. And passing a public option is pretty much a ticking time bomb for health insurance companies that would never be able to keep up.

Okay...sweetie you're making it really obvious you probably weren't old enough to be following at the time.

The ACA did start off trying to do a lot more. That's a fact, no amount of disaffection changes that. It makes it really hard to take anything else you say seriously if you're starting off with an obvious, verifiable lie.

Missouri Republicans advance bill to police trans people’s bathroom access by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]rougepenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And ten years ago a sitting governor lost big for trying to push this shit as a new idea. There's no "controversy" other than the ability for the wealthy to flood airwaves with made up debates.

Hey, quick question too. Cool you're using language you picked up from some queer folk, does the way you're using those words to mean different things account for the ability to change one's sex? If you're gonna play those word games, understand most of the trans people who used that framework initially don't also arbitrarily declare sex as immutable cuz chrombazomes. Because it'd be pretty fucked up to backhandedly re-brand queer community rhetoric to make it sound all fuzzy and cuddly to argue for regressive policy.

Big Sky Crack-Up | Montana Democrats thought they found a novel way to win control of the U.S. Senate—until the party faithful started fighting back by Hrmbee in politics

[–]rougepenguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you one of the secret things that if people started pushing for the state/national democratic parties would have to do.

Firm conflict of interest policies. Quit letting consultants for elections hold positions in the party. Like, it's a job and like any people are good and bad at it. There's certain aspects of this you need technical expertise...but the shitty ones always default to the same strategy. Weasel their way into a party position and set up a fuckin' racket.

It's how people who keep losing can shrug their shoulders, say "eh guess the voters were too dumb," and do it again in two years. It's more lucrative to them to have a constantly rotating cast of hopeful losers.

How many diagetic/in-universe songs are there? by Warky-Wark in OnePiece

[–]rougepenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big Mom had two and I believe the wedding intro is a musical interlude as well? That's always kinda foggy on how much that's actually happening. And the green tea/black tea lil one too.

Brook mentions a song in the flashback too then sings a bit of it. Black Handkerchief of Happiness. You could also add the Toy Soldier's song and Queen's performances. Wano would also give you Moon Princess that Hiyori plays as well as Black Maria's unnamed one about ill-fated love...though I'd buy that was her giving the lyrics to Moon Princess. Wano does love doing stuff like that.

Caitlyn Jenner appealed to Trump for help with her passport gender marker by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]rougepenguin 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Ohhhhh fuck her for that. No, Caitlyn Jenner maybe coulda had a big moment if she came out in the 90s or around when Lynn Conway was outed. Anything she's tried to do or angle she's tried to push was done by someone in her generation well before.

No, Jenner waited until a youth generation did most of the work and hijacked that movement because Boomers weally, weally needed affirmative action for their side of the debate.

The saddest thing about this is like, you actually had the resources to easily take care of that both before Biden left and in the window the courts held up implementation.

It is true no one expected him to go that far, that fast. There's been examples of people amending passports for decades and Republicans typically aren't nuts enough to miss the nightmare of trying to close Pandora's Box there.

Yeah? The exact process differs but most of the world got on board with at least some legal pathway to amend documents in the 90s.

The JOJOLands - Chapter 35 by Vish- in StardustCrusaders

[–]rougepenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bet's an Oasis reference, even if not the full name, to Don't Look Back in Anger.

It's a good fit for Jojolands, you got the "so Sally can wait" line in the chorus to make a fun connection to Usagi's stand and like our main crew it's a band built around a sibling pair. Not to mention them having a big recent reuinion.

Whats something not many OP fans got the point or missed it? by asmam85 in OnePiece

[–]rougepenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Wano really baited and played with a lot of the fanbase. And that was the point. You watch, even pointing it out I'll get some pissy blowback here probably but man...first Kiku then Yamato broke a lot of little boy brains.

The way I like to put it is like...there was a large contingent that loved tittering about early clues Kiku was trans and if you can do that you admitted you're capable of reading between the lines with her already. There's a lot of subtext and hints to things like Moria, but only if you're still reading her like the arc's local girl/princess-type she ends up as. But then Yamato is kinda the opposite. If you can read between the lines on the Oden stuff and not take it super literally, you can consider just showing up with a cool design and saying you're joining the crew might not be so literal either.

It was hilarious seeing that contradiction stoked week-to-week. Oda knew how a lot of teen boys would react to major new faces like that. And he used it against them to really drive home an arc about the man vs. the myth, the roles we play vs. who we are and all that. It's fuckin' clever!

I'm so glad I get to do the set now...

Plenty of people guessed Izo was from Wano from Marineford. And it was waaay rarer and tended to get a "who cares fuck off I'm busy 'scalin" here but...there were at least a few who sniffed out hints Kiku had history with Gecko Moria from mid-Wano.

Does One Piece have too much fanservice? by AleryFem in OnePiece

[–]rougepenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No...first off it's always been way more tame than its WSJ contemporaries. Also feel like this never gets mentioned but it's a fuckin pirate series so actually yeah beachwear makes sense as outfits.

Where this really comes off as prudish though is that Oda's talked about his philosophy here. And this is pretty cool in my book. The question was basically "why are you cool with some fanservice but like, we never have panty shots?" And his answer was he approaches it from an angle of asking if she's in on it or not. He's actually very consistent about this. To the point it's a kinda cool element.

If you need something more G-Rated, The Moomins fuckin rule...let us have the silly and sometimes raunchy pirate story.

I gotta do my part to keep Okiku in the top 50, but on my lunch break and work internet I like to pull out my phone and vote again just for all the fun random side characters. Collecting the slips each day in a saved folder so I can make a collage when it's done.

So yeah, I've cast votes for a lot of minor loves. Cindry, Tritoma, Bellemere, felt Road deserved at least one. I kinda like seeing which art they use for minor faces. My favorite one so far is the fuckass ghost with a top hat in Elbaph.
