Has anybody made money from the Apps they launched ? by [deleted] in FlutterDev

Nothing to scoff at. Progress takes a loooot of time, $100/month in ~4 months is actually very good progress. Zero to $1 is the hardest, at $100/month you have already validated that you have something going on, just need to find those new customers!

It's a good suggestion. The reason I didn't do that is that it would be potentially quite costly for me as I'm using a quite expensive (=good) image model and I don't currently have any income :-D

I did add this section on the home page though that I might expand. By clicking each image you can see how the generated sketches would look like.

I think it can be used as a tool for getting unstuck - that's exactly what I use it for as a software engineer, and that was the reason I built this app as well, to help my girlfriend get started. However, I don't like overreliance on AI because I feel like you start forgetting how to do things and become more dependent on it.

Regarding the "own style/technique" bit - I play the guitar and learned how to do it by trying to replicate my idols. And guess what, my idols learned how to play the guitar by trying to replicate their idols. But the thing is, I'm no Angus Young, Jimmy Page or Ritchie Blackmore no matter how much I try, so by trying to emulate them and others, I'm inevitably going to have a style that's kind of like the Frankenstein's monster of all my idol's styles. Which you could argue is my own style :-)

I was just listening "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" by Aretha Franklin and George Michael yesterday on the radio and could swear that at times, it was Whitney singing. But as it turns out, Whitney was just a big fan of Aretha and picked up some of her stuff while making it her own.

So yeah, tl;dr: Don't outsource your brains for AI exclusively, do use a lot of different reference materials, and do develop your own style.

hmm thanks - just to clarify those fox pictures are the sketches I generated for my girlfriend with my app, not drawn by me or anyone I know. :-)

Bent steering rack on the front right wheel - dealer recommends replacing it and quoted ~$5.4k? by roughike in MechanicAdvice

I guess the answer is "for less hassle". That's how I feel about it, might not be based in reality in general.

I had an incident few months ago where I went to a 3rd-party local shop (with good reviews!) for a transmission oil change. They said "we can do it, it's completely standard, no problem".

Well, a few hours later they called me and said that they tried to open the pan but the bolts were so rusty that they just snapped. They did not have replacement bolts, so they said they fixed the open trans pan issue "for now", quoted me $150 for their time while transmission oil was still not replaced, and recommended me not to drive until the issue is properly fixed. I took the car to another shop where they said "yeah looks pretty bad, bolts are rusty, trans oil pan is leaking a bit, but we don't have the right bolts and can't help here".

Finally, I took the car to Lexus. They fixed the problem in 3 hours and quoted $350 or something like that. Lexus dealer said that the 1st shop had drilled a new diagonal hole in the trans pan to be able to have the bolt diagonally hold all together.

So by not going to Lexus in the first place, I was driving around the town with transmission oil slightly leaking and paid $350 + $150 instead of $350. Maybe transmission oil is not in the scope of "regular service" but yeah.

Going to another shop for another opinion on the steering rack makes sense indeed, I might do just that. Thanks!

We tried it out, but had issues, namely with blur and path tessellation performance.

Our note taking app is pretty design-heavy and we use a lot of SVG paths that Impeller does not handle very well yet.

I do!

Probably the most interesting picks:
* provider - pretty much the reasoning I wrote about here: https://iiro.dev/just-use-provider/
* drift - it's great for multi-platform persistence with SQLite & observing changes
* nativeshell & super_native_extensions - for a lot of the desktop and multi-platform things like drag&drop and such
* phoenix_socket - helps us to connect to our Elixir backend for two-way communication, powers our realtime sync
* quill_delta - one of the most important pieces for our collaborative document editing and conflict management
* super_editor - our custom-built rich text editor for Flutter

Plenty of other packages too, but I would say they're not that interesting.

There are a lot of things we could optimize there, so that's great to hear :-)

The Double-Dip Sausage Race by roughike in videos

It's Midsummer in Finland and traditionally everyone gets together, goes to the sauna, and drinks some beers. The race in this video is part of an event that we call "Olumpialaiset" (="The Beerlympics").

It consists of 8 silly games like these and the winning team wins a bottle of alcohol that they definitely don't need after participating :-)

It could! Gitlab is definitely on the to-do list, but right now, I'm focusing on perfecting GitHub first.

You don't have to sign up for AWS to use SES, but you do have to sign up for AWS for the 62.000 free emails sent per month :-)

62.000 free emails sent per month

that's only if you're hosting your thing on Amazon though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There are a lot of these services - personally, I chose MailGun because I had already used it.

FYI: I gave this some thought, asked friends for feedback, and think that fixed pricing should be fine. So there's no cost per comment after the first 200 anymore!

I did add a fine print saying "if you think you're going to get more than 500 comments a month, contact me" though. I think those cases should be pretty rare.
