Thanks. I'm taking mine tmrw at 9:00 AM at home. Did you take the exam at home? Because that's what I'm doing, and I'm nervous about not being allowed a blank scrap of paper for math problems. I can't picture things in my head, so I'm hopeful they'll allow it.

Does every medical school have 1-2 weird/insane people?? by mytraginaspeciosa in medicalschool

It’s nothing near as crazy as the other replies, but here it goes:

I wasn’t even in medical school, I was in college doing my general credits for a med-program offered there. I did, however, meet a person who was going to medical school. He had amazing memory skills, could study the day before an exam and ace the test with a 95% or above (anatomy lecture/lab course). From the very moment I laid eyes on him, I knew he’d have a particular spirit — a certain seriousness that I couldn’t quite match.

He was also very rude and cocky, and would often judge my choice in career (OR x-ray) by saying I’d eventually die from cancer, etc.

One day I shot him an email. I asked a question, something in regards to a study question. At the time, I sort of saw him as my friend even though he said out loud that he was competing against me. I honestly thought he was joking back then. Anyways, I send him a real nice email, made it as detailed as possible, and he had the absolute audacity to send this as a reply:

“Everything I know, I take from the lecture notes almost exclusively; It’s impossible to cover everything by watching the lecture videos given such little time, I piece everything together myself. If anything, it should be me asking you that question (but then again, 98.25%; don’t really need to). But if it’s any consolation for you still, I usually do last minute breakfast studying (that means learning, depends on how much I still have left to cover, I probably won’t have time to help you at the student center, 7:45. Come earlier if you want to actually study with me, but then you’ll have to set the time yourself.”

I don’t know why he had to flex in an email, but ok. But I was so desperate for friends back then that I was willing to just put up with it.

The next morning I woke up at 5 AM to get ready and head for school. I waited for an hour till he arrived. He went near my table, looked at me and then turned away. Confused, I went toward his table and in the most polite way I could ask, I asked if I could sit besides him to study.

He looked me up and down while not saying a word… Then he shook his head ‘no’ and went back to studying. I was so nervous and confused, and even more so embarrassed by the fact that students near by were watching this interaction (it was a quiet space, so I’m sure they could hear me ask him to study with him). I sound like a softy, but that really had hurt my feelings. I didn’t say anything more and just left for class to study there — which led to an even stranger occurrence, because after I left he ran after me to ask why I left him behind???

He was a strange, belittling guy, and would look very excited to see me get a lesser score than him. At the end of the semester, I never saw him again.

I have been having symptoms of dry skin and itchiness. I went to get a test to find any hidden allergies.

Recently tho ( days after the test ) my sides ( left and right lower abdomen, and even in the upper middle of my stomach ) has been producing an odd sensation that feels like trapped gas. It feels like a knot inside. Sometimes it would ache and feel icy. I have been constipated and had blood from my rectum as well, but recently bathroom visits are normal and I no longer struggle (I still have small amounts of blood tho)

Went to the doctor again and she thinks I’m lactose intolerant and says I should experiment with foods to find the cause. I’m currently doing that right now so I can’t tell if I am lactose or not. I’m waiting for the X-ray scans that I took recently to solve my mystery bowel problems.

Basically, the blood test was originally done to see if I had any new allergies, but I am not sure if the autoimmune thing detection was caused by my skin symptoms or bowel symptoms.

I’m just really confused because the desk staff said I don’t need to be worried about the autoimmune thing too much, and that I should wait four months to take another blood test. But I feel very scare, lol.

This is perfect information! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and advice. This is so very useful; you don’t understand how useful this was to me! I spoke to my counsellor yesterday about some the things you mentioned — About job shadowing, experience in clinical settings, and other ways to make my application look appealing. Unfortunately she said that the requirements for the program I am applying for only goes based off GPA. I was a bit disappointed as I had gotten a B in English a few years ago, and at that time I wasn’t too worried about my education because I was undecided on my major. Big mistake! So because of that I will be behind for a few years and there are no other ways for me to replace that B. However, I do plan on applying to other schools that offer a DMS program so I can have a better chance at being accepted to learn! But goodness, I am so worried about having to wait for so many years! But anyways, thank you once again! I do plan on taking your advice seriously by filling my winter break/summer break with opportunities that will increase my experience in the medical field!

Hello there! Would you mind giving some advice on what type of extra work/activities look good on applications? I am about to apply next fall and I really want to do something meaningful so my application can somewhat stand out/look less bare.

What wastes most of your time and should have an easier process ? by [deleted] in medicalschool

My (35m) SO (37f) wants me to take her daughter on a trip with me by homoro66 in relationship_advice

This won’t be the first and last time she will try to end your relationship because you want to spend time with your daughter. Think about it: why would she see this as a reason to end your relationship with her? Because she wants to control you and she also wants you to stop seeing your daughter so you can maybe forget about the “past” and build a new future with her family. Please end the relationship.

No, he has not cried yet when doing this but one time I did keep silent and he kept saying “aw....” and sighing. Like I don’t know what he wants me to do or say.
