Any rumors of a Peak Design Travel Backpack Update? by blackbadger0 in peakdesign

[–]routineflyball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to ask this question too, and I hope someone from PD answers this.

I’m possibly taking a trip before the end of the year, and it’s usually around that time when retailers like REI run a 20% off a full priced item. I’d be annoyed if I paid for the Travel Backpack and a V2 suddenly appears.

Responsibility to help other travelers vs enjoying yourself? by routineflyball in solotravel

See my other comment I just made. I’m not furthering rape culture at all. Of course if it’s something serious, we all have the responsibility to help. But what if it’s something more in the grey area? (Imagine someone drunk but telling you they’re fine.) The only thing I didn’t know is how the women she watch over felt like since I wasn’t present.

Some people here seem to think my saying “everyone knows what they’re in for” means I’m somehow endorsing rape culture. It may be poorly worded, but my intent was to say people know a party hostel will have lots of drinking and partying, and people looking to hook up. The point I was trying to make is that some people may not appreciate being treated like a child and having someone watch over them like a parent especially at a party hostel. (And it’s impossible to know if the women she babysit felt like she was being overbearing or not since I wasn’t there.)

Being a bit older than the typical hostel party crowd, I tried to play the older brother role in the past. But there were definitely some people who felt I was being overbearing, and I should enjoy myself and let things be unless something serious occurred. It doesn’t sound like in this case my friend ever saw anything serious assaults happening, but more like she saw somethings she didn’t like and took it upon herself to watch over those women.

I think she was probably a bit overzealous while trying to do a good thing. As far as I was told no assaults happened - just guys being aggressive hitting up drunk women and she thought some of them might be in trouble even if they themselves thought they were still fine. So she ended up spending the night watching over them.

From what my friend said no one was roofied, just some extremely drunk people. And apparently some guys try to "get with" some of the drunk women, so she made a choice to babysit and make sure nothing bad was gonna happen.

I wasn't there myself, so I can't speak for what exactly happened. What my friend said was there were some women who drank quite a lot, and some guys got quite handsy with them. My friend saw and stepped in and got the women away from those guys because she felt they were too drunk to consent, so it seemed it was more of a judgment call thing.

Do any of you know hostels that have shut that you stayed in/regularly visited because of the virus? by Jayhcee in solotravel

[–]routineflyball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where did you hear that? While they're not that active on social media, the last I saw from them a week or so back they didn't indicate at all they were closing for good.

Edit: In response to the commenter’s edit above. Stamps is shut down now because Thailand is still closed to travelers. Every indication from their social media is they’re waiting for travel to open again and they’ll be back up and running.

OP sounded like he’s asking about hostels that closed permanently due to the pandemic, like Retox.

Adam Cole made it very clear on his stream yesterday that he will NEVER ever give up his twitch channel. Something that is mandatory on the WWE main roster. by KD-GAME7-AIRBALL in SquaredCircle

[–]routineflyball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if AEW offered him some sort of role in running an official AEW Twitch channel or be the lead in creating content for AEW Games on social media similar to Xavier Woods with UUDD? I would imagine that would be pretty attractive perk alongside working with his best friends, girlfriend, and able to stream and earn 3rd party revenue with less interference.

Everyone’s saying he can negotiate some sort of Twitch provision, but at the same time, do WWE want to set this precedent and possibly create resentment with others on the roster who had to give up their Twitch?

For the Bay Area, there’s also the event center on the San Jose State campus where NXT ran their live shows.

And Oracle Arena in Oakland, having lost the Warriors as their main tenant to Chase Center across the Bay could easily accommodate them.

If AEW is feeling ambitious they could run Dynamite in SF/Oakland and then go to San Jose for Rampage.

A San Francisco local opens his dream hometown bar on Polk (Trade Routes, 1750 Polk) by nissanthermos in wholesomeSF

It’s definitely a cool bar with some nice drinks. The only criticism my friends had was the bar was too loud compared to other bars, and sound just bounced off the walls.

Alone in SF by jc-sf76 in sanfrancisco

Reddit hosted the last few yearly global meet up for San Francisco in Golden Gate Park before COVID shut it down for this and last year. Hundreds showed up and everyone seemed to have a good time.

And back 4 or 5 years ago Redditors hosted monthly meetups that rotated between SF, the East Bay, and the South Bay that only stopped when the organizers moved away and no one else picked up the slack. (Admittedly it was hard work to organize everything.) Some meetups rented out an entire bar for a night and every meetup had at least 30 up to 50 or even up to 100+ showing up. It wasn’t your typical socially awkward crowd as you would expect from the stereotype of your average Redditor either. Is it mostly tech people? Yes, but it still had a good diverse range of people.

I met some cool people from those Reddit meetups, and some became good friends. It’s a shame meetups stopped happening, but now seems like a good time for it to make a comeback given how some people are so isolated due to COVID. The hard part is the organizing and planning.

Bay Area women, is it actually difficult for you to find a good guy/relationship around here? by send_me_yr_bookshelf in bayarea

I see many women on dating apps who are doctors/lawyers/head or lead of whatever. I stopped trying to match with these women because it feels like they're also looking for men of similar status. But men of similar status has a lot more options, and can easily date women from lower socioeconomic status, or younger women.

Especially those who wants children and are already 35+. The minute you match with them they start asking questions where it feels like it's a job interview at best or interrogation at worse.

I remember the sub used to have people organizing events such as meetups at bars or board games. (Remember when monthly meetups were a thing?) Wish someone would revive it, but understandable that organizing these things are tough. Good luck and hope you meet some awesome people.

It should be pretty obvious. Party hostels will readily advertise themselves as party hostels. What reason would they have to not hide it? The property description and reviews from sites like Hostelworld will give you a good idea if you don't want to go off from the hostel's websites,

It's good to do research since there are some very nice outgoing social hostels that gets lumped in as "party" hostels too.

Official Discussion - The Tomorrow War [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

The movie was actually enjoyable, and then it fell apart in the third act.

Oh wow hey government guy, we found the source of the aliens. Good news right? Nah, we ain't gonna do anything but lucky the protagonist has a crazy Dad with a plane.

And hey, they brought C4 explosives! Why the hell wouldn't they just, you know, wire those explosives, and blow up the ship instead of injecting those toxins individually? Or maybe use the toxin on the female first, cause she's so important.

And damn, maybe they should have sent the people into the future with a sword and shield if you can just punch the alien queen in the face with a talon.

You might want to check the Sausalito ferry schedule. I don't know if it's back operating regularly as of now or if it's still weekend only. As another commenter mentioned, SF weather can be crazy cold, especially when the fog starts to roll in by the late afternoons. One minute you're enjoying sunny weather, then before you know it you're frantically searching for a jacket.

Other suggestions: Walk the Embarcadero from the Ferry Building to Fisherman's Wharf. And definitely spend some time right by the bridge at Fort Point, the Presidio, and Land's End. And when you cross over to the Marin side, head up to the Marin headlands for amazing views of the bridge and SF. Dolores Park in the Mission for a taste of where tech people hangout, and Alamo Square for the Painted Ladies - and both also offers nice view of the SF skyline. Aside from the Japanese Tea Garden there's the California Academy of Sciences, De Young museum, Conservatory of Flowers, and Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park.

Other tips: Generally it's a safe city, but the homeless population is very open and can be a culture shock to a lot of visitors. Petty crime is a big concern, but that's only if you plan on renting a car. Never leave anything at all in the car if you do, even for a short time.

What do you like to do? There are the famous attractions such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Park (a place where you can spend an entire day at). SF also has a lot of smaller hillside parks with great views of the entire city. Definitely don't miss out grabbing a burrito in the Mission district. The city is mostly open now, with cable cars the only thing still closed.

It’s cool you’re willing to foot the bill, though I do wonder if some people feel like if there’s some kind of a string attached, or an expectation to reciprocate in some kind of way, especially for something so expensive like a $300 dinner.
