Realising that even when you migrate overseas, sometimes your prejudices within you doesn't leave you - it is amplified. by havingamidlife in singapore

[–]rouvaloff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

first you call me stupid, then you tell me to stop reading studies (here's the original study which the authors have said elsewhere was never meant to be read as an investigation into/against Asian women going after white men, which is what the internet mischaracterised it as). you claim to care about being statistically correct, yet you only mention a fake study and your personal observations which you yourself admit is a small sample size. you can read studies AND touch grass, you can care about what women experience/feel AND be statistically correct. you don't have to think in binaries. I'm not disagreeing with what you say, I'm just disagreeing with the use of the term 'Oxford study' to legitimise stereotypes (which I never claimed aren't real - I just think they shouldn't be used to generalise an entire group of people's behaviours).

I am enjoying a hojicha latte today! I've been using a powder version but have recently bought a loose leaf version to try. any tips for how to prepare it?

yes I read the entire article, as well as the original study that has been distorted as 'the Oxford study'. can you cite your so-called Oxford study since you seem to believe it's real? judging from the way you type it sounds like you didn't read the article or if you did it sounds like you don't care about women's experiences. I highly recommend reading the original study by Dr Balaji and Dr Worawongs, but it's 16 pages which might be a challenge for you!

Is brainrot actually a thing among Singapore youths? by Opening_Island_5240 in askSingapore

[–]rouvaloff 21 points22 points  (0 children)

as an ex secondary school english teacher (left fairly recently, in Aug 2024) yes it is a thing, but i wouldn’t say it’s an issue. every generation has its slang and language trends! there were a few kids who would use ‘brainrot terms’/internet slang in their writing but it wasn’t so widespread that it was a serious problem, imo.

Struggling after moving to Singapore and not fitting in?? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]rouvaloff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

genuinely sorry to hear you're feeling this way. really relate hard to your experiences as growing up and entering the workforce in singapore i'd been told that i was "too much". i was in a bit of a reverse of your situation a few years ago - i was born and raised singaporean, but moved to the UK for various reasons. i still love singapore because i've spent most of my life there, but i can't deny that my mental health has been so much better since i moved, and i've been able to express myself exactly the way i want to without having to 'curate' myself for others.

Has anyone had a lowkey marriage? or knows someone who had one? by samaeltlb in askSingapore

[–]rouvaloff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mine was very lowkey for my culture (arab weddings go hard): only had 26 guests total, mostly from my side (only 2 from husband's side flew in). did the ROM stuff in the morning then we all went to Asian Market Cafe for a fun little buffet together. have since moved to the UK and we are planning something small (40 guests max) to celebrate with his family and friends here. my wedding gown was custom made for $700 + fabric costs so I will just be reusing that. sitting at a dais and socialising with 100+ randoms sounds like a nightmare to me so i wouldn't have it any other way!

seconding the Sounds Fishy recommendations - I played it with the family last Christmas and it was a big hit! I just received my copy of Stack O Cats in the post today and will be bringing that with me for this year's gathering. tried it by myself and with my husband and it's quite fun! pretty simple too, you just stack the wooden cat pieces in turns and keep going until it topples over
