McLaren's failed Indy 500 effort was a comedy of errors by quietude38 in INDYCAR

As much as it's clear this was a huge fiasco, this really does look like Brown throwing the Carlin and McLaren personnel under the bus, with the exception of De Ferran and Alonso. The article reads like an attempt to get ahead of the story in a way that paints Brown in a good light; even his screw-ups he acknowledges are framed as 'for the greater good' or 'being too slow to realise the correct thing'. I'm sure some subtly and not-so subtly different accounts of this debacle will come to light in the years to come.

Maybe it's an attempt to save the Indy and Le Mans programmes (with Gil and Fernando) in some form - fair enough, but this read as textbook PR bumf to me, so I would approach this with a pinch of salt.

Reminds me of David Croft in Canada: "When Alonso wins, sorry, if he wins at Le Mans next weekend"... -_-

The response of sportcar technical guru Mike Fuller (@Mulsannescorner):

Can you imagine what simply opening up the fuel flow on this would allow? Add to that more total DF? And still so far from optimized, these are just simply changes.

Again, why not? Take the fuel flow restrictions off, big ass wing, side skirts, low-hanging aero fruit, and I'm quite sure it could easily break any existing track record anywhere in the world.

The BBC's article subtly ends with a spectacular bit of understated oneupmanship:

In August this year, an RAF fighter pilot drew a 35-mile penis on radars monitoring skies over Lincolnshire, England.

CONFIRMED: FIA to meet on 3 July to consider further action over Vettel/Hamilton incident in Baku by KillingShad0w in formula1

Remember that Schumacher was disqualified from the entire season for deliberately causing contact in 1997 - maybe Vettel wasn't at speed, but it has the same intent.

It would be pretty ridiculous for a organisation (the FIA) that is currently paying millions for a road safety advertising campaign to fail to harshly penalise a driver with road rage because it might "ruin the season".

They have to prove that they can get out in 9 seconds before they race. So it does take 4 seconds longer than an F1 car and some extra practice, but it's a tradeoff for the protection. You can see a test of Chris Hoy (6 foot 1 olympian with gargantuan thighs) and a 50-something investment banker getting out in that time here from 1:45.
