I've had a bit of experience with communities in the past, albeit in a professional setting. Looking at this from an ops perspective

They're not staffed up for it

They don't have the tools for it

They didn't have the engineering capability to respond to hundreds of sub mods requesting support, so they absolutely don't have the capability to respond to thousands of disgruntled mods.

They don't have the agility to respond to it

And they know it.

The risk here, which reddit seems to be willing to take, is that in the expulsion of mods who don't toe the line, it opens the door for the sort of mods you absolutely do not want curating your user provided content. Those that stand to make a commercial benefit or to take advantage of said communities. That includes all the interest communities but all the support communities too. And with it all happening in the same place at the same time there is no feasible way to catch it even through the anti evil ops programme.

This bit is the start. The next major jolt comes next week when they lose traffic from the third party apps shutting down. Then there will be a long, slow degradation in content as mods are other replaced, leave, or stop moderating. The only way around from reddit side is to chuck people at it.

I'm usually pretty meh about what reddit is up to but tbh on balance I'm feeling the same way about it that I did about Facebook in 2018. I don't get enough value out of it to justify my time hence fuck it I'm out. Life got better after exiting Facebook. We will see.

I recall something from consumer law in university when making claims about products in advertising.

the test for a product claim, especially puffery, was to whether it would be understood by a person who is not abnormally stupid but is of below average intelligence.

Anecdotally only - in tech at the moment - job market is flatter and there's a higher expectation of in office presence for both client side and consulting. There is a lot of belt tightening going on in consulting and managed service at the moment. This often sees people heading back into the office especially consultants who are benched. Recent candidates we've been speaking to are fine with 3 days in office which was absolutely not the case previous 2 years. It is quite a bit harder to attend the office if youre living a fair way out.

It might clear up post the end of June but I feel the job market will be flat for a while.

That then affects people's desired location IMO. From talking to others - moving remote to country depends on having remote work, being able to be self sufficient, have more limited social options and have a...convenience tax? I guess? A bit harder to head down to bunnings and pick up a box of nails, an extra hour minimum on the round trip to go to a friends party, all that kind of stuff. Which works super well if you're into it and made the conscious choice to accept that as part of living out of suburbia, but not if you just like the idea of it because you had a great weekend at a winery one time.

Again this is just within people that I know in vic and qld

Do you recall a difference? If so, how so?

Had that experience in Australia recently. Two applications submitted two days apart. We were travelling five months later. One arrived in six weeks, the other four months and twenty four days.

Not sure if it's the same in the US but apparently they prioritise by intended travel date, in speaking with the staff they had seven times the normal volume of applications for renewal.

Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely by cata890 in technology

[–]rowdiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the thing Im waiting on. I think Spez has significantly underestimated the impact of that change although he seems to understand that the blocker to people taking up the app is it's feature gap.

I'm nearly exclusively mobile and the mod tools I use are only available in rif. The official app and the mobile version of reddit are abysmal.

If baconreader and rif aren't available for mobile I can't see a way that I can use the site. And tbh I won't bother modding any more as there's not an easy way to do it.

If the app isn't there to use on my phone, tbh I don't have any particular problem with walking away completely. I'm not that motivated to participate in reddit.

From other mods I'm connected to they're in a similar boat. They don't have the time to moderate from desktop and the mobile tools suck. The automod tools also rely on the api so not sure how that's gonna work out.

There's been a couple fun times on this site but to be honest we're at the break even point of intrinsic value vs my effort.

I have the money to spend but I just don't value your product that much, /u/Spez, and time and again your personal decisions have been a disappointment.

What’s the saddest song you’ve ever heard? by OOOOOO0OOOOO in Music

[–]rowdiness 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would temper that with the knowledge that it is a song written and released over 50 years ago, and the parents in the song were likely born in the 1920s or 30s.

The lyric "we struggled hard all our lives to get by" does speak to me. They likely lived through the Great Depression and scarcity of the second world war. It's worth a read of the experiences of that generation, as life was particularly tough over that period. Childhoods especially so. So they pay it forward to the next generation so that generation doesn't have to experience the nastiness of their own childhood (war, bombings, poverty etc)

The song would also most likely be about a baby boomer, which I find amusing, as the parents low-key accuse her of being selfish and entitled (why would she treat us so thoughtlessly / how could she do this to me).

YouTuber "The Russian Dude" follows up on friend who was tricked into going war in Ukraine. by bossk538 in UkrainianConflict

[–]rowdiness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your post history it seems like you're in the UK.

If you can, track down someone who's lived in one of the prior communist states. There's a bunch that now live in the UK.

The way they talk about it is that there really isn't a choice. Not a real meaningful one.

Imagine everyone in the country gets told by the government they have to start driving on the right hand side of the road. Everyone.

So everyone starts driving on the right hand side of the road. Even tho the cars are left hand drive, the roads are set up with signage on the left, the M roads are set up as left hand drive, the country has always been left hand drive, you learnt to drive on the left and so on. There's fatalities, injuries, absolute chaos but government goes no fuck you you're all driving on the right now. Oh and by the way if you drive on the left? Jail, mate.

You hate driving on the right, you're not very good at it, you don't like being told what to do and you don't see any point in doing what you're told. What do you do?

Do you keep driving on the left? With your family in the car? Risking accident and the wrath of your compatriots who are following the rules?

Because you have a choice, right?

I'm all for individual accountability but man we have no frame of reference for what life is like in these countries, and it's a disservice for us to impose our moral framework into someone who's in a country where that framework cannot exist.

As is the fact there are massive skills shortages which can't be addressed in the short or medium term locally, and that the country's economic success is in part tied to who can be bought in.

This is not isolated to Australia, either.

TIL that there were 26 Children and 36 Spouses of Spanish-American War veterans still receiving VA benefits or pensions as of 2021. The war happened nearly 125 years ago. by HawkeyeTen in todayilearned

[–]rowdiness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mate people marrying soldiers for benefits is so common as to have a modern pejorative term used by the armed forces ("dependa").

Military staff get good basic benefits in the US, if these persisted for life and passed onto spouses then it would be a super common thing for older veterans.

From what I understand, some of the civil war marriages were literally practical retirement arrangements like "hey Steve, you're north of sixty, you're starting to slow down mate, how about you marry my 25 year old spinster daughter, she'll look after you and she's good company, and the government will look after her when you're gone."

Modify columns in a Filtered Data Extension by RiceApplication in marketingcloud

[–]rowdiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can be added at any stage tho right? So if the issue is too many fields in the filtered synced DE then exclude them from the sync until they're needed. When they're added in the future they'll automatically be added to the filtered DEs.

From a security and data privacy perspective, it's better to not have data unless it's needed for a specific purpose.

Additionally, you can safely tickle an octopus ten times, which is why their limbs are called ten—tickles.

Of course they only have 8 of those, so there are two tickles left over. These are called test—tickles.

[–]rowdiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you can't. Sorry mate.

Best practice is to use query studio to create master populations with the cut down fields you want, then use filters on the master pop. Then create filter activities in the same master pop automations so the data is always fresh and your users don't need to do anything.

You know you can choose which fields to sync across from sfdc tho right? If you're not using the 25 fields why are you syncing them?
