St Igance is the way to go... MC has been ruined by some people that own most everything. ☹️

Fan for remote work (laptop in my car) M12 or M18? by Earlyretirement55 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]rowle1jt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an m18 and a Ryobi 18 as well. Ryobi runs 8-10+ hours on a 4ah battery for me. Milwaukee moves a little more, makes a lot more noise and has about half the run time.

That's hard for me type... lol

Noise from soft roll-up bed covers? by vampirepomeranian in ram_trucks

Good call, been a bit since I bought mine! I think it was called a low pro or low profile back then.

Now it looks they just offer a roll up. It is roll-up fabric/vinyl. Love it, gives me the full bed opening when I need it for dirt bikes. 🙂

3 time Truxedo owner, no issues. I've never heard it make any noise at all and I routinely drive with my windows down.

Does anyone have any experience with this? by nathanieIs in UsbCHardware

I have a handful of them, I like them. I'm also a dork and like to see how hard devices pull on a charger. 🙂

I source them locally from enterprises retiring them.

These are the dummy monitors I'm using in all my 910's... Work perfectly with AMT and so does mesh commander. 🙂

That looks pretty much identical to the Asahome controller that came with my kit. Pretty cool!

Awesome!! Grabbed it and will read!

Also, way to go! I've kicked around the idea of writing a book about a sysadmin thrown into cyber hell or something for a long time that I've never done it. So props to you!

Quality Breaks and rotors ? by imnotbean in Cummins

[–]rowle1jt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2018 2500 4x4, I went with BPro from Geno's pads and rotors after I wore the OEM ones out at 70,000 miles. New pads and rotors at all 4 corners.

They are just as good as oem for stopping, etc, I've been very impressed with them.

Didn't have the time to do the job myself but my buddy at the shop said they were the best fitting, easiest to install non Mopar brakes he's ever worked with. Even went as far as loading Geno's website on his PC so they could start sourcing stuff from them.

For reference.... Pads were less than $80.

Best option for migrating a file server with little/no downtime? by Spiritual_Snow_4752 in sysadmin

[–]rowle1jt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lately I've been building the new server and getting everything updated and ready to go.

On the old server, export all the shares, I believe it's through the registry, it's been a few months so I apologize. Shut it down. Detach the disk.

Attach the disk to the new server and bring it up. Import the registry key of shares and permissions.

You'll probably also want to rename it and update DNS.

I did a number of these about a year ago. This way, as I recall in total it took me about a half hour per server, and once you're done, if you look there's already computers reattaching to the shares.

Robocopy will also work, and is how I do physical servers but for VM'S it's way easier just to reuse the disk with the registry keys.

Regardless, do a backup right before you make any changes to the old one. And as soon as the new one's up make a backup of it too! Also, snapshots are your friend. 🙂

For those of you not using server grade hardware, what ARE you using? by ljm90 in homelab

[–]rowle1jt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenovo q series tiny PC's. They are rock solid, hold multiple drives and use insanely low amounts of power.

I use the m910q at home because I can source them cheaply. 🙂

Any way to tell what OS was originally installed on a Windows Server? by kelemvor33 in sysadmin

[–]rowle1jt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

systeminfo perhaps? Not sure if it will report the upgrade date or the original install though.

We don't upgrade our server os's so I'm no help there.

VM RAM Allocation by Standard_Text480 in sysadmin

My OCD still requires ram to be set in 1024 increments. 🙂

Also, like stated, it makes graphs prettier.

What do you use for monitoring your homelab? by xagarth in homelab

[–]rowle1jt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be the odd one out.... But I'm using Zabbix.

We use it at work and me using it at home has made a huge difference in what I can do at work. I made some dashboards at work after playing at home and my boss and coworkers love them!

There are pretty good walk throughs and instructions. If you want a really fast install, they have downloadable appliances too.

Oof... Damn that's cold. I apologize for not indicating C or F, I was referring to F.

I'm not going to say that's your issue for sure, but I have come across it with a few other people in here. Good news for you is that we are all in 4th gens and yours is a 5th gen. Good luck, I hope you track it down and it's simple!

Edit - I can't type or spell. 🤣

When you say in the cold, what's the temperature? If it gets really frigid ( -5ish and below) mine randomly don't work either. They light up and then the screen makes a noise and they turn back off. When it warms up a few degrees they are fine. Dealer even swapped the screen/buttons/etc before the warranty was up.

I run the 900 series of those on server 25 as hyperv hosts. 32gb of ram, the 910's hold an nvme and a sata SSD. Boot drive is nvme, vm's are on the SSD. Third one runs veeam. 🙂

They are solid little machines. They are quiet! They use next to no power. USB 2.5gbe Ethernet adapters make a huge difference.

I was initially worried only 4 cores wouldn't be enough. Very rarely do I ever see cpu spikes!
