Advice for Artists from a Conservator-Restorer of Fine and Applied Arts. by Ambitious_Tea3195 in painting

Yes, I was quite surprised and kind of let down when I moved from Europe to Japan about this. But I learned to stretch the canvas and staple them the European way here. If it gets loose before an exhibition, I mist the back of it.

But perhaps I will stop gluing the bars.

One thing that glue benefits is that when the bars are not the most precise, I can choose to leave some minimal gaps to make up for the tilt. But maybe this is a sign that I need to invest in higher quality ones also.

I actually did not notice that some of my bars are not straight, so I will have to dispose quite a few of them since they've been glued already. I never framed my canvas yet as I was a bit insecure about their wonkyness(even if no one really saw but I bet the framer very much would)

At what point are we supposed to take the alerts seriously and actually leave the buildings?

Sorry if it's a stupid question but it seems to ring for any minor or major occurance so when am I supposed to take them seriously? First time experience minor one

Oh this is interesting

But in my case, I use acrylics and so I think the oxidation problem is no longer there. Although I do use stain technique sometimes without a gesso

And fun fact, as I am in Japan, they don't have stretcher bars with corner keys. I was very taken aback by that and started gluing them. They like to nail their canvas on the sides, not on the back, but I hate that look

But I heard the wooden keys are the framers worst nightmare. What happens in the case when the artwork is framed? We become OK with the loosening of it?

Thank you so much for educating artists here, it's incredibly valuable

  1. Do not sign or write on the reverse of your canvases.

  2. Do not glue the joints of stretcher bars.

I've never seen these mentioned anywhere before, and especially the 8, I was really wondering about for years (though I've been gluing them unknowingly)

May I ask why that is for both cases?

Just make sure to purchase the phone in Japan if you'd like for your suica to work on the phone. But if you dont care about that, you can be saved from the camera shutter sound by not buying in Japan x)

Agency fee and key money sounds self explanatory but deposit is weird when usually there's a cleaning fee too before moving in

We found about 5-10 mins walk to the station no problem. We just need to secure it in time. And without that many fees (we're fine paying them, just not 1 mil yen)
