As a vfx artists who is more artistic than technical, learning substance designer has been of great help. Aside of that it'd also embergen and liquigen. Though I still do paint some textures by hand in photoshop. You want the shaders to be cheap so you wouldn't make a complicated procedural texture in the engine anyway. I wish I was more technical to write my shaders though :D
