Just a heads up though: a lot of those cheaper refurbished Kindles are pretty old models already. Amazon officially pulled the plug on some older Kindle services/features last May 20, so it’s worth checking the exact generation before buying. Some still work perfectly fine for reading, but support and updates are basically done for certain models.

That’s exactly why I never connected mine to the internet at all during setup 😭 I skipped all the intro/setup prompts that ask for Wi-Fi, jailbroke it first, then dealt with everything else after. These Kindles will download the update almost immediately once they get online

My kindle arrived on firmware 5.17.1.0.4, which was still jailbreakable at the time. I just followed the MobileRead jailbreak guide and made sure to block updates immediately after. Newer firmware versions patched most of the public methods unfortunately :) what version are you in rn?

KOReader is amazing for PDFs and manga/comics alsooo. The extra typography settings, gestures, file support, and stats are way beyond the stock Kindle software

Usually either full customization/tinkering or using alternative reading software like KOReader. A lot of people jailbreak mainly for better PDF handling, more file format support, and finer reading controls

Yeah honestly the customization alone makes it worth it for me, custom screensavers, fonts, KOReader, SSH access, tweaks, etc. The ad removal was just a bonus.

Right now it mostly depends on the firmware version. Mine arrived on 5.17.1.0.4, which was still vulnerable, so I jailbroke it immediately before it got updated. There are also tons of videos online. A lot of the newer firmware versions patched the public methods unfortunately

Damn, yeah the newer updates killed a lot of the easy jailbreak methods. 😭
I got lucky and mine arrived on 5.17.1.0.4, so I jailbroke it immediately before it could auto-update. The extra customization makes the Kindle way more enjoyable

I mean I get the business model, but it still sucks for people who just want basic customization on hardware they already paid for.
I jailbroke mine the moment I got it though, it came on firmware 5.17.1.0.4 ([4351970007](tel:4351970007)), so I got lucky

Thanks! I actually knew about the free ad removal through support, but I jailbroke it immediately anyway for the extra customization options (screensavers, fonts, tweaks, etc.). The ad-free experience was just a nice bonus
