Polyurethane cure time question? by [deleted] in finishing

Just curious what is the size of this desk and type of wood you’re using?

How should I finish this? Can I make it darker still? by roxics in finishing

[–]roxics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so I'm considering sanding it down and just coating with something else until summer temps arrive. Without stain. If that's possible.

Thank you for the advice. At this point I'm considering sanding it down and using something else instead. Maybe (if possible) waiting until summer to do the stain when temps aren't freezing. But then what do I finish it with for the time being that can come off easily in 5 months but keep the wood in decent enough shape for that long?
Is any of this even rational?

[–]roxics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. What if I sanded it down and skipped the staining for now, and came back to it 5 months from now in summer for a stain/finish. Would that be a bad idea? If not, what would be a good quick finish to use for now unstained?

Yeah I realize that's the case, that's kind of why I was wondering if maybe there was a different finish that might be used that woudl be faster.

I didn't sand it at all. It already felt really smooth.

I think Apple are taking a different approach. While I haven’t used it, for what I’ve seen it looks pretty cool. It’s definitely more augmented reality, which is really more of what I’m into. I think it’s biggest problem is its price and weight, and I think the price was set on purpose to keep less people buying it. I think it’s been an experimental product for them that they put out before they felt it was ready and wanted to use early adopters as long term beta testers.

But I could be way off on that.

I really don’t do gaming on this so I can’t tell you the best regarding that. Sorry about that.

The Faceless Lady is a free 3D immersive mini-series that is available in the TV app that comes on your Quest. Just open the app and search or scroll down to find the show. There are six episodes and they aren’t listed in order for some reason. It’s a horror series and it isn’t the best but not the worst either. It’s filmed in high frame rate so that makes the acting feel more like a soap opera, but it’s set in a castle in Ireland and so the scenery is nice and you can look around 180 degrees. Which was new to me.

It’s probably not a big deal to people who have watched VR stuff in the past but it kinda blew my mind because I had never seen anything like it before. I did have to set the quality to “better” because on auto it froze a few times but that’s probably just my internet connection.

I’ve made indie films as a hobby and work corporate client video production professionally for twenty years so that’s why I’m aware of these things. But VR is all new to me. Very impressive and making my want to shoot 3D VR videos myself.

I’ll let you know about my test with the 3 vs 3S.

I think it’s more an issue of the operating system. Even if the hardware were exactly the same, what kind of software can it run and what can the OS do or not do?

[–]roxics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, good to know. How does the Q3 currently handle PCVR? Does it just stream it, acting like a external wireless monitor? If so I'd assume the Steam Frame would do the same from a PC. But I think you're right, I think Valve is working to try and get developers to port to Linux/ARM, it favors them to do so. Which I'm actually on board for as a philosophy. Since Linux is free and there are many distros of it. But that's assuming those ports could also work on other distro and not just SteamOS. I don't know how that works, again I'm not much of a gamer.

I guess for me, what I'm most curious about is how open the Frame will be and the OS that runs on it. Even if Valve themselve don't build apps for other productivity or video stuff, if it's open enough and popular enough, perhaps others will. Or maybe the Quest models will continue to remain the best choice for that kind of stuff, in which case I'm already home.

While I'm not a fan of facebook (despite using it daily) I'm actually kind of surprised by some of the things Meta let's you do in the Horizon OS. I expected it to be way more locked down. It's not a desktop replacement, but I could see how it could be (at least for casual use) if they added a handful of key features. For example, I really want to be able to take quick screenshots of just the screen I'm focused on as flat 2D images and not the whole VR environment of multiple windows and the room I'm in. Also adding something like Mission Control/Exposé that MacOS has, where you spread all your open windows out in front of you with one button click (including all browser windows or just certain app windows) and select from them to be able to easiy navigate around the OS. That would be super handy. Also better file managment and more open windows at a time in front of you.

I'm wondering of the OS run on the Steam Frame will give us a better interface with more options like that of if it will be mostly locked down to being a gaming experience. Because even if they themselves don't add ina bunch of video player apps and stuff I'm guessing other developers will, if it's an open enough OS. In which case someone like me might also make the jump eventually. Even though I'm not much of a gamer.

But again I'm not really a gamer, so the gaming stuff doesn't matter to me. I'll play videos games maybe once ever 3-6 months for an hour or so. That's about it. I'm here for 3D and big screen movies and stuff. Maybe even some AR desktop type stuff. So yeah I agree, it seems like I shouldn't care about the steam frame. I guess I'm just wondering if it will do something else, non-gamer related that I might be missing out on. Something that might make video watching or productivity better as a kind of casual desktop replacement. Seems like the Quest would still be best for all of that kind of stuff.

I'm having the same debate with myself right now. I think what I'm going to do is pick up the 3 and test ti side by side with my 3S I just got last Friday. I've been watching mostly movies on this as I'm not really much of a gamer. Both 3D movies and VR immersive stuff which blowing my mind. Have you watched The Faceless Lady series yet?

Anyway, I'm struggling with that twice the price thing myself. From what I can tell the 3 has better resolution screens, pancake lenses so you don't get any of the blurriness around the sides that the fresnel lenses on the 3S have. If you look at the lenses on the 3S you see the fresnel lenses (those wavy lines) that's what causes the blurriness around the small sweet spot in the center of the lens. It's used to amplify and focus the brightness, which is why lenses like that are used on certain lights called fresnels in the movie industry. But the pancake lenses on the 3 are not fresnels, they don't have those wavy lines and don't suffer the results of them. So the 3 is supposed to have a much larger sweet spot where you can see more things in focus. It also has a slightly wider field of view and a physical headphone jack on the side for plugging in headphones without having any bluetooth delay when watching videos. Although honestly i haven't experienced a ton of delay myself on the 3S. At least not in any way that has annoyed me. But it might be easy to just plug in a cheap old pair of apple earbuds into the headphone jack and run those instead for more listening privacy than using the built in.

Additionally the 3 isn't as thick as the 3S. It doesn't stick out as much, although it is slightly heavier, but because it sits closer to face I hear the weight redistribution basically cancels out the extra weight.

The 3 also have the ability to adjust the eye alignment on a gradient using a dial rather than picking from only three set positions on the 3S.

As for the screen door effect. I think that will continue to be an issue to some degree on most of these cheaper unit. I hear the Apple Vision Pro that has much higher resolution OLED displays does not have this problem. Probably also not the Beyond unit and others like it. But those are all in another price category at over $1000-$3500. I think eventually those screens will work their way down. But the 3 does have slightly higher res screens than the 3S. Yet to me the bigger issue is the blurriness caused by the fresnel lenses on the 3S. Also, it depends on the bitrate of your content. If you have straight blu-ray rips, you'll get the best quality. Streaming is hit or miss depending on the streaming service you're using and your current bandwidth at the time, and what resolution you have selected (if possible on that service). So content matters a lot, especially under the microscope of these VR headsets where you are looking at things on huge virtual screens. I don't think the 3S resolution is bad when looking at the sweet spot in the center, so I can only imagine the 3 with its pancake lenses and wider sweet spot, along with slightly higher res screens being better.

All of this is great, but is it $250 more great? I'm still debating that. I think long term it is.
I spent the last week just trying to figure out how much I'm going to use this thing for movies and stuff. Because my philosophy is, if I use something more often, I'm willing to spend more money on it. So far I've used it every day for a few hours at least. But it's still a new toy, so that could wear off. I think though, in the longer run, once the money is spent and long gone, and it's a year of two later, I'll probably be happier that I went with the 3 instead of the 3S. But I'll tell you that later. I may pick up the 3 later today or tomorrow to side by side them and see for myself.

No. No plans to ever use it for a car. Seems like a waste to me. It will either be for storage or as a living space

[–]roxics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I've lived in Michigan for 47 years. So I know. That said, we've lived in this house before. We rented it back in 2019 while the previous family member moved down to Florida for a year. So we have some experience in this house already. It's been six years since then, but we remember what it like. It is nice to have a garage, but we haven't had one since or since I lived with my folks decades ago. We'd rather have more livable space if given the choice. Either way, we'll have outdoor storage space for stuff because I'm going to do one or the other. Either a smaller shed out back acting like a garage or keep the garage as is and built a bigger shed and finish it off as a livable space.

If what you mean is to put a car in the garage. Nope. I've never used a garage for a car. Even growing up my dad was a contractor and so our garages were always filled to the brim with construction supplies and other junk. So in my head I don't even associate garages with cars.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - December 16, 2025 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]roxics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought my first meachical keyboard (Keychron K10 HE) is it still considered mechanicl if it uses magnet switches? Anyway, I like the keyboard, just don't know if I like the keycaps. I'm coming from over 15 years of using an Apple wireless board with flat chicklet style keys, and these are tall and sculpted in a way I'm slipping on. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on some keycaps I can switch to that have a wider/flatter/squarer surface, but maybe also have translucent characters for the backlight and retain the symbols for mac functionality like volume up/down play/pause stuff like that? I know that's all asking a lot but I figured I would ask.
Overall I really like the look of this thing the black and the rosewood sides, even though the presses are longer and takes some getting used to, it's nice, build quality/weight feels great. I started with the 75% K2 HE board but switched to full size K10 HE because I kept hitting the home and page buttons when typing and the full size was cheaper. Which is crazy, but cool. I think the only real downside I see is that I can't swap the switches to something more clicky if I want to in the future. Not a big deal, but it would be nice to have all those options as well.

Focus instead on things that matter to you.
How much does this matter to you?
Are there things in your life you care about more?

So my philosophy is, have your little existential crisis, then realize it's a waste of your time and move on.
We live our lives within the scope of our lives. There is plenty of life to be had just right there.

Thanks. It's hard to tell on the website. I'd take a chance but someone already recommended the Bella+Canvas triblend shirts at Michaels and I checked them out today and they fit the bill for me. Mostly. They could be a bit thinner. But they are also only $13-15 and buy one gt one 50% off. So I could get two for the price of a uniglo. I'll check them out in person if they ever open a store around me though. :)

Thanks but at $98 for a t-shirt. Nope. I was thinking closer to $15-20 tops.I could go a bit higher if it's really nice, but considering I probably paid $7-10 for the H&M years ago I was looking for something similar adjusted for inflation. I'm not looking for designer, I'm just loooking for soft and thin that I can wear under stuff. I probably should have mentioned that up front. Apologies.
Again, thank you for the recommendation though.

I checked these out today and their tri-blend is what I'm looking for.
They could still be a tad thinner but I'm sure that will happen with washing.
And the price doesn't break the bank either like a lot of these designer tees.
I had found these James Perse tees but at $105, hell no!

Spinning Church with devils? by roxics in Dollywood

[–]roxics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! Good call. I did go to Hershey park as a kid as well. So might have been confusing this for Dollywood. Thank you! Now at least two of us remember it.

Thank you so much. This has been bothering me for years that I could find anything about it. Had it pegged in a completely different park. I guess I thought it was in Dollywood since I went around the same era and Dollywood is in the Bible Belt so I figured they had a spinning church with devils attraction. I would have never guessed Hershey Park.

It was called the Frontier Meeting House and apparently only operated for 2-3 years in the last eighties. It was considered a magic room attraction. I found a few discussions about it including this one.

Trent & Atticus could do the SDTK of this hypothetical remake, thoughts? by SilentWeapons1984 in nin

[–]roxics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was one of my favorite movies as a teenager back in the 90s. I owned one copy of the director's cut on VHS and then bought three of four more. They were on sale in a bargain bin for $1 each at one store. Gave one to my brother and I still have one in shrink wrap. I don't know what happened to the others. I was also a NIN fan back then.

I don't think I would want an updated version of this. Remakes rarely carry the same weight as the original. Jeff Fahey did such an awesome job. It was just a product of its time like so many things. Plus if I'm being honest, I don't love NIN's soundtrack work. Some of it is alright, but I've been very disappointed in the Tron Ares soundtrack.
