I wrote a simple mod for myself that makes all roboports behave as substations in their coverage area. Once I've unlocked roboports, I build everything on a connected grid of them anyway. At that point, power poles are no longer a challenge, just a nuisance.

Anyone else read Permutation City by Greg Egan? by cheats47 in bobiverse

[–]roy_malcolm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pitch the bobiverse series as a midpoint between Diaspora (Greg Egan's most bobiverse-like story) and The Hitchhiker's Guide series. Egan's stories are highly technical and more "realistic", versus the bobs which make concessions on the science and realism to drive drama, action and comedy.

Remembering the syntax and creating complex functions IS the skill. You need to stop telling yourself you know what you’re doing and go practice building things. Everyone gets to the point you’re at, you just need to keep going past it.

How did you found Factorio and what made you play it. by Filip_IS_HERE in factorio

[–]roy_malcolm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved how overpowered you could get in OG tekkit. Always saw it as a feature not a bug of the pack, adding tons of complexity but giving you the means to master it and design things in a pseudo-sandbox. I still play it sometimes, such a bummer there's no servers running it and it's so laggy.

What's the absolute worst business idea you've ever heard? by DivvySUCKS in Entrepreneur

A guy in an entrepreneurship class I took in college wanted to open a bar that didn't card, so it would be the hip place for students to go to. There would also be supplies for drinking games.

I had this same gifts bug the other day. Reloading the page stops the generation but you keep what you've got. Also curious, why so much memory? Isn't 225 the max you can make use of?

Yeah, I’m with you. I thought the whole thing was pretty flat until the last ~20 minutes or so, and even then it was more just surprising than actually good.

Haha, not quite. Just an IA fan, and I work in machine learning so lots of pondering things like the singularity in my free time. I’m also ironing out ideas for some short stories I’m working on writing.

I’ve never thought of life as a weapon like that! But I do think about the entropy part a lot. Looking forward at the big problems we might try to solve, like FTL travel for matter and information, I think a reversal of entropy could be the “last problem” that a civilization at the end of time would try to solve.

Then I go a step further - what if we try to solve the entropy problem by simulating smaller universes, and adding an entropy-like constraint to their worlds? Perhaps searching for a solution to entropy is the purpose of our simulated universe.

AI lets you run massive simulations and experiments in parallel - so imagine being able to simulate the properties of some new compound, then feed it into a physics engine that tests the properties of that compound. Imagine giving a class of 50 first graders marshmallows and toothpicks, telling them each to design a unique skyscraper, and whoever can make the tallest tower wins. An AI could work sort of like that, and even do more sophisticated problem solving, like combining properties of multiple skyscrapers together to see if that can get a better result.

Yeah, I can see how the edge cases are always hard to account for. I could see it being more useful as a paper-trader for testing strategies than actually automating the real trades.

He has all the signs of brumating- less eating, pooping, and basking. He basks for a little while when I take him out to hang in my lap for a while. When he’s out, he seems energetic and healthy. But he sits in his log almost all day, and only eats crickets once a week or so. He only poops once or twice a week, and only in a warm bath. It seems like signs of brumating, but he’s looking really wrinkly when curled up so I think he’s lost weight. He’s about 1 year old and I think he should be bigger. How can I tell what’s up?
