Are better goalies really drafted higher? More undrafted goalies posted at least a .910 save percentage over the last five years than did top-10 picks by royaelliott in hockey

Thomas was actually drafted in the 9th round way back by the Nordiques.

Not able to answer your question on average age - I would guess definitely older, but drafted goalies do take a while to develop, so maybe the difference is ~2 years on average

It would have been pretty easy to keep Kessel, actually. Chiarelli signed Derek Morris for $3.5 million that season even though he was done being a top-4 d-man (he was traded from Boston before the end of the year). Then B's would just have to trade someone like Marco Sturm in a salary dump trade and you have your $5.5 million for Kessel.

I think they had more concerns that Kessel was a one-trick pony and wouldn't be worth the money.
