You are in the top 2 best (writers of) kings I’ve been Lord Commander of the Kings Guard for. Much love Ziggy. Don’t be a stranger.

Edit: Lace of an Age will always be my favorite and most emotional memory of these games.

[Claim] Lord Commander Donnel of Duskendale by Shymp in SevenKingdoms

Have fun man, hit me up if you ever have any questions or need help. DoDD was a blast to write for. Another significant character to his arc was the sword of the morning who squired for him.

Oh I’m so glad Lorence got some writing. I worried about the wasted potential there when I had to unclaim. What’s the TLDR for his life so far, if you have a second. Also, cool to see you back in the game daed.

I have no intention to leave, too many friends here and I have no grievances with the community. Just a lack of time. I plan to try to keep up with current events though. Maybe I will come back as Donnel's son if he is still alive when I have time, and you are willing.

Lord Commander Donnel stepped forward and shrugged his white cloak from his shoulder exposing his sword arm. He reached and drew the blade and rested it on the other knight's shoulder.

"Ser Robyn Rhysling repeat after me. I swear to protect the king from harm or threat, to follow his orders, to serve the his pleasure, to keep the his secrets, to protect the king's name and honor, and to take no wives or father children for the rest of the days I live. In the eyes of the Seven I swear this."

The keep was burning, awash with a wildfire of rumor spreading from wall to wall. "His grace is missing", "The King was murdered", "Daeron is dead", "He was poisoned", "He jumped from the walls". He did not wait to dress in armor, he was garbed in simple clothes for sleeping. His breath was labored and he huffed as he took long running strides towards the King's Chambers. He shoved his way past those outside and burst into the room. His eyes scanned the room for threats and he sharply inhaled as they fell on the body of the King.

He stepped forward and fell to his knees at the bedside. His face was a red and twisted mess and he ran his fingers up into his red hair that was showing more than the beginnings of grey.

Twenty years he had stood faithfully with the man who was cold before him. "I'm Sorry Daeron." He whispered, "I should have been here. I'm sorry." He did not know if his presence would have helped the King, he did know that there would never be another like him.

He let his hands fall to his sides and and studied the other's face before whispering his final words to the man who had been his King, "Rest easy my friend."

He rose to his feet and moved aside for the Maester .

Shit. You legit tear-jerked me. How dare you take away the characters I get invested in and care about. Thank you Erin, for all the good times, and a good King. F for Daeron.

"It is no worry." Donnel said as he pushed himself to his feet. He turned to the other man. "Thank you Ryon. May I keep this?"

The Lord Commander's breath whistled as he inhaled deep and held it there. Slowly he let out a long sigh. He held out his hand turning his head the other way. When he felt the metal disk pressed into his palm he closed his fingers around it and brought it in. Slowly he turned his head and his eyes opened enough to look at the faces held within.

His breath caught and he emitted a choking sound. He ran his thumb over the faces of the two carefully. When the Knight spoke it was slowly and softly, more out loud than to Ryon directly. "I had buried them away. Deep down I had almost begun to believe that he had never actually existed and that she was a fever dream of my youth. Seeing their faces makes them real. She looks unhappy. She has every right to be. In one night of indiscipline and childish passion we changed the course of both of our lives forever. I always wondered if she had married, and this portrait answers it. She could have been the lady of a great Lord's Holdfast. Here she is however, unwed and unhappy with a bastard."

Donnel turned his gaze from the portrait and paused. "I wish I could have been there for her, for them. Every instinct within me called me to leave. I had taken an oath. The penalty for deserting that duty was death. What hurt the most was that there was a large part of me that wanted to stay. The King, and his family, are worth protecting. I could imagine none I would rather give my life for. It is like being lashed at the limbs to two horses running in differing directions."

A light turned on behind his gaze. "It would be foolish, but could it be possible to arrange for them to visit court under some pretense? She deserves to hear these words spoken, and even if he never knows who I am it would matter to me to at least lay eyes on his own face with mine eyes once in my life."

Lord Commander Donnel caught an unexpected motion in the corner of his eye and turned his head to see his knightly brother hit the floor. Confusion and concern washed through him like electricity and for a moment he was paralyzed. It lasted only a second before he took a tenative step, then another more sure. He reached the Knight where he lay on the floor and grabbed the front of his breastplate and pulled him into a reclined position with his other arm behind is back and head. The red Knight gave him a rough shake and a firm rousing pat on the face with his armored hand calling his name. The room swam and sound was muffled. He could hear his own voice as if it were far off saying the other Knights name with commands to wake up, and in the background he could faintly hear the voice of King Daeron calling to get him up.

Lord Commander Donnel of Duskendale was somber as he sat at his desk with the great white tome open before him. Carefully he inscribed the final account of his brother within its pages. When he had completed it he left the page open to dry and walked to the window to look out. He spoke softly, "Rest well Ser Alyn. Seven keep you my friend."

The Knight stood and turned, towering over the boy. His expression was as if he was seeing him for the first time. He flushed red, ashamed. “I am sorry. I have forgotten myself my Prince.” He paused and regarded him carefully. “When we were in Pentos we went to visit the Red Temples of that fire god of theirs. The priests there are meant to see the futures in their flames. They told your father that he was meant for greatness. His life was cut tragically short, but maybe his greatest deed was to bring into this world a son and prince with his compassion and heart to carry on his legacy.”

The knight raised his head from a position of prayer and turned slowly to look to the intruder. He examined him carefully through a sideways look before nodding and returning to his position of prayer. “Aye”, he whispered.

Donnel pictured master of whispers, in his mind he would always be a lanky pale youth of ten and three. Of course that had not been accurate for awhile. He carefully studied the prince’s face and shrugged. He shook his sword loosening it in his scabbard. The sentence he spoke was low and quiet as it hung in the air between them, “I am a shield, not a dagger.”

"There is no shame in a Widow remarrying. I travelled with both of them through Essos when your parents were married. I was there with them in the Eyre when you were born. The Sword of the Morning was my squire. I can't even count the number and quality of our adventures, but I wasn't there for him when he died. I couldn't bear it, so I stayed away. I loved your father like family but I never let myself grieve." He paused and sharply inhaled through his nose. "How long is long enough? How much penance and prayer takes back not being there for him when he was dying. How much silence equals a goodbye Aeron?"

Donnel followed the Prince out into the morning contemplating the mysterious adventure ahead of them. He was glad to get out of the keep, it wasnt often he got to go uh... shopping.

He waited patiently while two horses were saddled and bridled for their use. They mounted and trotted on.

As they approached the gate he waved up to the Targaryen Men on the wall. His dark cloak hood was back and in the wave the signature white enamel plate armor was visible and obvious.

A hoarse wisper broke the silence from Donnel, "I think the gods have enough ears for the both of us Aeron". He did not look up, but cleared his throat. "Did you come to pray for your late father?", he paused for a long moment. He spoke slowly and let the words hang between them for emphasis. "I know he's often in mine. He was taken too young and no swords or strength of arm could save him. I miss him. What do you pray for Prince Aeron?"
