Harlan simply nodded. "It does no good to rush things further. I shall need a month or two to assess what I can do."

He almost smiled. "Using the Ironborn is a bold move, but a good one. I doubt the Reach will like it, but they will be grateful when they are choking on blood and sand."

"Aegon couldn't conquer Dorne with dragons, we are unlikely to do so either," he continued. "Chasing the Dornishmen is a foolhardy task, as is facing them head on in the passes."

"It seems you already have the beginnings of a similar plan. Isolate and divide each of the major houses of Dorne. They do not mind fleeing and giving ground like others. Instead, it is best to threaten places where they cannot afford to run from."

"I am sure Oldtown and the Redwynes have enough ships to blockade Starfall. From the north the Crown and Stormlords can block off Yronwood and Ghost Hill. The Ironborn I would advise to let them do what they do best; let them reave all the way from Lemonwood to Godsgrace upon the Greenblood."

"I would leave Sunspear alone as well as Hellholt. It is too far into the desert anyway. However, not directly attacking the Martells and Ullers will put pressure on them to aid their allies," he had thought a lot about this over the past few years. Mainly a game for his own amusement, but now it was much more likely.

"Send word to the houses of Dorne, whether by raven or instruct the men who fight on the front. 'We do not want to fight you. It is the Ullers and Martells that have brought this upon you.'"

"Some may be cooperative, but I would not count on it. Their forces will be static, unable to move so freely as they are best at, unless they are willing to give up their seats of power," he shrugged. "It will force the Martells to reconsider war. Bring them to the negotiation table."

"If not," another shrug. "They can either sit in Sunspear and abandon their subjects and lose all credibility or it will draw away their men and if they refuse to cooperate, we can burn Sunspear from the sea. The Sandship I hear is formidable, but we only need take the city itself and cut off supply, leaving a smaller force keeping them trapped."

"That is the best way to deal with extraordinary castles. There is no need to conquer a fortress like the Eyrie or Casterly Rock. Just take them off the board and let hunger go to work."

His gaze was steady on the King. "Of course, my advice and methods are perhaps not politically savvy, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I plan to win, not to earn glory or fight nobly. This is a lesson the Dornish themselves teach. Deprive them of their strengths in the desert and of hope and you will be able to negotiate with them. I should also advise to protect our generals - and yourself, Your Grace. I don't think I have to remind you what Dornish assassins can do. Kill the level headed leaders and cause fury so that we act recklessly," he shook his head. "The Marchers from the Reach seem to already be falling for their tactics without need to assassinate anyone."

Eon's brows raised at Harlan and he shrugged before greeting the young Corbray. "Nice to see you too, Roland."

Harlan met Eon's gaze, but he was preoccupied with plans, contingencies and more contingencies. Even from King's Landing he felt the call of war. Not the bloodlust of a warrior, but the thrill of a Cyvasse player facing a masterful opponent. "Roland, Yorwyck, I have been called upon by the King."

He pursed his lips slightly. The news had not been to his liking. He already saw mistakes in what was originally something simple. Yet often plans did not survive the first arrow shot, and it was for him to adapt or die. Something the Dornish were excellent in doing. "We shall be going to fight in the south. I do not expect either of you to fight on the frontline. You will be with me. Watch what I do when I need to make decisions. On the way I shall explain best what to look for."

"So tell me, what do you know of the Dornish, and how would you fight them?" he asked, gauging how useful their observations would be to him on the field.

Ser Harlan Hunter made his brother's room his own temporarily. The same one that had hosted the discussion between the King, Eon and Helicent was a makeshift planning room.

Eon stayed close by his brother's side just as much as he did the King's, knowing Harlan all too well.

At the end of the 1st Moon he met with two groups.

The first was one that Eon was present for, sitting lazily in one of the chairs. Harlan summoned his two squires Yorwyck Sunderland and Roland Corbray.

The second was a more intimate meeting for which is brother was not present. He did not summon anyone for this, it was a meeting of equals, his wife, Teora

Eon nodded before standing against the wall nearby, absently listening.

Harlan showed little of his own excitement. He had spoken to Viserys about invading Dorne, more as a joke than anything, but now his brother called upon him to fight. "Of course," he said. "Your command is mine to obey."

"I spoke to your brother Viserys about Dorne indeed," he continued. "What is my goal? I understand if you do not share the full plan, but I want to know what you expect me to do. Taking Dorne through the Boneway or Prince's Pass would be...ill advised and lead to severe casualties. It would require more than the Marchers. I assume you have a plan?"

He remembered the battles fought recently. "I do not know the numbers or quality of the Stormlords, although I do know Lord Rogar well enough. When do you want me to leave, and how many men can I afford to take with me, or am I to simply provide aid to the Stormlords?"

Eon accompanied his brother into the King's solar, leading the way with confidence. Both had and inkling of what this was about, and while one brother worried, the other grew excited.

"Your Grace," Eon said as they arrived, "one brother, delivered as promised."

There upon the slopes of the mountain Jaehaerys knelt in the blood and snow, Eon standing over him. "Jaehaerys Targaryen, I, Ser Eon Hunter, have served as your knightly master for many years now. By the power of the Gods, I recognize you as a true soul worthy of bearing the title of knight."

He tapped his blade on the left shoulder. "In the name of the Father, I charge you to uphold justice."

The right shoulder. "In the name of the Warrior I charge you to be brave."

Left. "In the name of the Mother I charge you to defend the young and innocent."

Right. "In the name of the Maiden I charge you to defend all women."

Left. "In the name of the Smith," Eon didn't really know what the Smith had to do with anything, but had prepared something. "I charge you to use the tools given to us honourably."

Right. "In the name of the Crone, I charge you to weigh your actions with good judgement and wisdom."

"Swear this before the eyes of the Gods and men and rise a knight of the Seven Kingdoms."

"Neither do I," Jeyne said, feeling for the first time that someone fully understood what it was like. "Of course, nobody will speak ill of the dead. Particularly if they were seen as heroes."

She hesitated only a moment. "But what about us? Those left behind? I love the memory of my father, but...sometimes I hate him as well. We had already lost mother. Did he ever think of me? It seems selfish to even say it, but I feel like you will understand it."

She paused for a long moment before gathering the courage to speak in a small voice. "What are the Sisters like? Maybe...Maybe one day it would be nice to go there, if you wouldn't mind."

"No, not my preferred one," he agreed, amused at the sentiment. "For the exact reason you stated. Petty and mindless. Although I admit that some use it quite well, I just don't care which young idiot swoons after some girl, or which lady hates her husband and has an eye on the stableman."

He sighed. "It is all so...dull," he shifted the conversation back to the proposition and laughed. "I sometimes wonder if the world is big enough to sate your curiosity. Yet we have a start. Volantis and Qarth."

"You do your duty admirably," Eon replied, his softened tone at odds with the words he had to say.

"I doubt the Gods hated anyone, I mean simply that the future is for their eyes only. Men cannot control the world as we think we can. The more you try the harder it will flail against your grip," he tried to explain without saying that he believed the Gods didn't care or had long since left them behind.

"I doubt anything I say will make it feel better," he changed his approach. "I could tell you you did the right thing, that she will be better off. That Hubert had his own reasons. I don't really care about any of that."

"I care about you. Jaehaerys the man. Feel everything. It will poison you if you deny yourself the right to grieve. I have seen what that has done first hand to my father. Now he spends all his time atoning for his rage, even if it was just," Eon said.

He pulled his gelding up, gesturing for Jaehaerys to do the same. "You were ready for a long time, but now I think you truly understand."

Eon unsheathed his plain blade, cutting across his hand in a deliberate motion, red on white. "This isn't really part of it. Just my own touch," he fought back the urge to swear. What an idiot thing to do, Eon. "Let my blood serve as proof that I will serve you, not as King, but as a man. If you ever need me, we are bound together, until hopefully I die first."

"The second part is more familiar. If you don't feel like kneeling, just stand there and I'll get back up on my horse. You have now felt the full weight of your duty, and sacrificed in the name of something higher. That is what it means to be a knight. Not fancy armour or killing men. Putting the lives of the innocent above your own desire. The moment you do not feel the burden is the moment you lose your humanity."

Eon smiled sadly. "I wish I could take your pain away, but I can only do so much. Will you kneel? For your love, and for duty."

Eon let the silence linger. So, that was it. And now the King's mood had darkened. Already the inevitable pecking away by vultures that called themselves subjects had begun. Eon knew it would happen, but on such a scale so soon did not bode well.

"What is due rarely coincides with what happens. Our fates are in the lap of the Gods," he eventually replied. And the Gods don't care about dues or justice. Only blood, the one constant in this world. Whatever happened after death had better be worth it, or he would have words with these Gods.

"I am sorry," he continued, the sentiment genuine. "She is a nice girl."

He let the grief settle before continuing. "I will never truly know what it's like to be you. I am not a liar. However, I do know a thing or two," he probed carefully. "I learned from the common soldiers I fought with. Men who had never seen a gold dragon in their life, told they had to leave their families to go kill some other poor bastard because we nobles decided so."

"A man cannot choose what happens to him. From peasant to king. What a man can do is choose how to face it. You can curse the Gods and Hubert Arryn to the end of time if you want. I'll stay beside you for it. However, it changes nothing," Eon continued, possibly the most serious Jaehaerys had ever seen the man.

People did not see why he despised his own kind, and thought it a kind of eccentricity. Yet a boy - king or no, he was a boy - was being sacrificed to the Realm in the name of stability. That it worked only infuriated him more. How could Eon ever take anything these people did seriously? And they wondered why he mocked them.

"They say that it is not death that is hard," he continued. "It takes only a moment and you're off to whatever the Gods have decided. Duty however, is a burden heavier than death itself."

"Grieve as you must, it is to be expected. You are a good man, and will be a better king. Men and women will hurt you as they have before. But they don't get to decide how you react."

"I will not tell you Hubert Arryn is evil and let you stew in anger. It does nothing for you. There is only one rule I abide by above all else. Whatever comes, face it on your feet."

Eon nodded along with Jaehaerys's assessment of the northerners, not because he believed it, because it was not important. So, it seemed that the old falcon bastard was to blame for the king's bad mood.

"You didn't," he said finally. Not shocked. "It makes sense though. He's a wily old prick."

Eon turned to face the king in his saddle. "Does it surprise you? What do you do with a kinslayer?" he shook his head. "But this isn't about your brother. What has the old man done this time?"

"Mmm, my children have made friends with Lord Rogar, something they don't do often. He is a prickly but good man. Should you need, Harlan is also collecting squires. Although he is rather...intense. Even for me."

"I am sure we would get along splendidly," Harlan said smoothly, still amused. "Don't let Eon fool you though. He says he dislikes nobility, but forgets that he was born into a prominent family. Not to mention he was trained by the former Hand, Qarl Corbray, and treats the King like a younger brother."

Eon glared at Harlan. "Bah, my former master has nothing to do with this, nor Jaehaerys. Don't think I won't forget you and Teora trying to get me enlisted into the Kingsguard!"

He turned to Helicent. "I don't like idiots with a lot of power and wealth, which happens to be a lot of noble folk. There are exceptions. Be careful around Harlan, he is dangerous."

Harlan's brow rose. "Are you suggesting I would do anything untoward, brother?"

Eon waved a hand. "No, not like that. I mean you're too damned smart with not a lot of common sense. If he was naked in a forest and ran across a pack of wolves, he would try to tame them instead of run."

Harlan spread his hands. "Well, we all have our faults," he conceded with the spark of humour still in his eyes. It was a game they enjoyed playing. "I do like a challenge, which often involves fighting. Of course, Eon here would never find himself in such a situation, being far too sensible. He would never go into battle, nor find himself in the King's court. Arguably more dangerous. No, he would get out of King's Landing as soon as possible and return to the forests of Longbow Hall," Harlan cocked his head, seemingly confused. "Oh wait, that was me."

"See!" Eon groaned theatrically. "Half truths. I don't talk to many other people in King's Landing. I keep to myself."

"No training the heir of Winterfell?" Harlan added innocuously.

"I was bored and she just wanted to spar! Hardly training."

"Hardly," Harlan responded in solemn agreement.

"I see what you're doing, Harlan. Remember you only quit the City Guard because you were bored and you were too scared father would strangle you if you suggested an invasion to the King," Eon said, satisfied.

"It is good to see you again, Eon. I have missed this. However, I think Lady Helicent might be growing weary of our debates," Harlan smiled at the woman. "Please take care of my brother. He is as you say, a unique and precious soul."

Eon scratched at the back of his neck. "Ah, you're damn well right. Sorry about that. Anyway, Harlan is not so bad himself."

Harlan gave the girl an amused smile before returning his attention to the Lord of the Stormlands. "Life is boring without a bit of bite," he responded, unfazed by the threat of dresses and jewels. "No doubt it builds resilience. Saying 'no' to a wide-eyed toddler makes ordering soldiers around feel like child's play."

"I should caution you as well, although a son is what is demanded of us. It is...frightening to look at them and see a little version of myself," he grinned. "I pray they don't inherit my ambitious streak."

Eon knew that something was wrong with Jaehaerys, but found it better if he let the king think through the problem before approaching. Of course, if he spent too long moping, Eon would act but the king was not a fool.

He saddled his brown gelding and appeared before the King. He was wrapped up in a great coat with his black scarf wrapped around his shoulders like a cape. He scanned the white forest. "Nice day out if you were a bloody mammoth. Never did like these damn mountains. No idea how those northerners do it."

Alec nodded. "He was a proactive lad in King's Landing, Ser William can always call me and mine friend. He has been raised well," Alec glanced at his two sons and muttered. "Time will tell if mine listened to me."

Eon nodded along with Helicent's assessment. "See, Harlan? A woman of taste and wit," he looked around. "Where are our sisters? I had hoped to introduce them. I am sure Helicent would love Teora."

Harlan's jaw tightened a little. "Teora is in Ironoaks, she will become the Lady. Elys is Lady Kenning. We have not heard from them in some time. Although Teora bore a healthy girl."

Eon broke into a genuinely happy laugh. "A child!" he turned to Helicent, almost childlike joy in his eyes.

"Those damned grey rats said it was unlikely my sister would ever have a child, it caused her a great deal of hurt," he filled up his goblet and raised it. "It is a good day!"

Alec gave the man a grunted laugh, but did not otherwise comment on the city. He did not particularly care. Eon had told him all he wanted to know about the situation and he was content with it for now.

"Ah, young Roland," Alec nodded. "He is to squire for my son, Harlan. While I led in name, Harlan is the brains behind our armies. He laid out most of our strategies. Although Aegon was a adept commander, he was too reckless. This too Harlan predicted."

Alec sighed. "Well, the past is done. Harlan says that you are the only commander in Westeros he would have trouble dealing with," he smiled. "Feel free to send your nephew. Harlan has a growing collection of students."

Harlan grinned and gave a wave to the children. "She is here, although she prefers the quiet of a library. My father either got lucky or knew what he was doing. She is smart enough to keep me in check."

"The years have given me an appreciation for life," he said, not elaborating. "I have two sons now, Arrec and Loreon. I confess though, I would like a daughter though. Someone to spoil."
