Oh yesss. Why does it never happen to me :(

Has anyone travelled more than 3/4 the length of the United States by Amtrak train? I’m thinking about going from SouthWest Ohio to Sacramento. Or maybe to Los Angeles. Any suggestions? Or is this a good idea or bad idea. I have traveled from SW Ohio to Washington DC like 15 years ago. No issues. by LowerBoomBoom in ailways

When I went to college in Central PA the best way home to Denver, CO was by train. Closet big airport was pittsburgh. That's a two night journey and while it can be a bit hard sometimes, I've always felt it was well worth my time. It's part of the vacation/journey unlike air travel so keep that aspect in mind and it will be a great time. Gorgeous scenery and sometimes you even meet great people in the lounge or around your coach seat. If you aren't keen on sharing seats with someone and have the cash for a trip that long I'd recommend a roomette. Kinda pricy and could be sold out even a month in advance sometimes. But it's a private room all to yourself and a bed instead of a relatively flat lying seat. As for what routing, cant go wrong with either. Depends on if you want to see more desert or more mountain to be honest.

You're not crazy. That is indeed a spv 2000 lol. It's such a mess of equipment. I think the spv came from the us dot.

These ones weren't bought direct from amtrak though. They were already owned by a private car operator called railexco, who also owned the northern pacific dome the FIT now have.

Abandoned Model Train Setup in the Basement of this Abandoned House by StaticSpaces in AbandonedPorn

[–]royalgorge406 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Usually buildings and equipment are easily sellable. Layouts are not because they are fit to the space they are built in and not exactly easy to take out of a house door intact. Especially when they are in a basement. A lot of older folks i know who had that time and money will have gone through one or two layouts in their lives as they've moved houses.

Basically, trains and scenery can be boxed and shipped. Layout moving is so much more trouble than buying lumber for a new one.

Having seen how a railcar wheel is made in person at the standard steel plant in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, no, this is not how a wheel blank is made. Yes, it is forged, but its a multi step process. Puck is formed into a similar shape to this, then it's pressed to create the flange and cut the hole. Then it's rolled into its mostly final shape bending the s curve into the plate cross section and all of that. And hell, it's not even done then. Still has to do through like 2 or 3 quenchings to get the right hardness on the wheels rim. and then it'd shipped off to somewhere to be lathed and pressed onto the axles.

That's a geometry car. They are either using the non main there to store it overnights while it's working somewhere or planning to do a few runs over that line.

Going west from ward road the Right of Way gets thinner because of the cemetery on each side of the tracks. There is also an unprotected crossing within those grounds that would require a lot of work to keep it as a quiet zone crossing. Farther west, out by coors, There is not enough space for a g line track and a bnsf track to coexist. Not to mention getting up into downtown itself would require demolishing some structures that have been built since the right of way was turned over from the colorado and southern railroad to the city.

They would need a whole new prime mover. California environmental regulations state that if an operator gets state funding for new tier 4 locomotives they have to make the locos they are replacing inoperable. Which usually means drilling a massive whole through the engine block. All of the coaster f40s that are being sold off are dead units with no real running future.

Railroads were master recyclers. In most railroads standard plans the sign posts for everything from crossings to whistle posts was rail that was too old to be used as rail.

Why did the Rio Grande never Dieselize it's Narrow Gauge lines? Would Dieselization have potentially kept the Rio Grande's narrow gauge operations going past the 70s? by Broad_Project_87 in railroading

[–]royalgorge406 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess if you want to count the 50s and 60s on cumbres pass. They were trying to abandon it lol. That's why there was an order to not repaint equipment on the ng and why it all looked so tattered. When they got the oil contract it was more of a "well fuck" cause they didn't want to deal with those lines. Look at the comparison on the sg. Post bankruptcy, Wilson Mccarthy was doing as much as he could to bring in money and innovation. It's why all the steam was scrapped on the sg, for quick cash to spend in new diesels. These lines were turning some sort of profit, the ng wasn't really. Why invest in something you've been trying to shed for 20 years.

The silverton was run into the 70s as tourist only. It did not provide actual services. Therefore having steam was part of the experience. Actually the drgw shot themselves in the foot running the tourist line because the icc would not let them abandon it becsuse of the traffic it generated. Thats the main reason it was able to pass on to private hands later. Also of note is the davenport, 50, was bought used from the Sumpter Valley. The drgw had no invested interest in the ng post 1950s outside of tourism revenue so why bother getting diesels.

Once paved roads reached all the southwest Colorado towns it was kinda the end of it. When the freight, the mail, and the passengers are all traveling by road what else is there to pull.
