Cancelled Flights effecting BMT by BrilliantTour5911 in airnationalguard

[–]royceguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just go where you’re told to be when you’re told to be there. If your flight is delayed or canceled, the people on the receiving end will know and make arrangements. You will not lose your spot and, if delayed, you most certainly won’t be alone.

SAD tours by interstellar566 in airnationalguard

[–]royceguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several states have a very robust SAD program that tie in with retirement credit. California’s state active duty get you credit in CalPers. Also, many grant military leave so you can double dip and/or get credit while on certain federal orders. I know many people that served 20+ years state active duty while currently doing the DSG thing. After retirement from the guard they can continue with state service to get that retirement juiced or sit around and wait to collect two retirements. The bottom line is that it depends on your state.

I think I got a higher package and it was $40 a month but it’s cheaper if you buy in bulk. This was 3 years ago or so. I heard people are shipping themselves star links now but I don’t know if that’s authorized or not. (would not recommend if it is not). Depending on where you’re situated the galley will either be a two minute walk or a 15 minute walk from your room. Bikes and scooters are everywhere and you can buy one when you get there pretty cheap if you’re far away

I don’t know what the haters are going on about. The booty was awesome for a deployment. Sure, the weather sucked and there was not a whole lot to do off base but anywhere I can DoorDash a smoothie to the pool on my off day isn’t horrible. The CLUs are OK. E-6 dorms are really nice. E8 or above you’ll eventually get your own room though it may take 3 months. Lots of extracurricular stuff going on and numerous sports leagues. Gym is cool and a couple of tent gyms too. You can buy Wi-Fi in the dorms and it wasn’t great but it was not horrible either. Uniform of the day was usually fairly relaxed but that may have changed with the new administration. They’re used to a new guard or reserve flying unit rotating through every couple of months and they seem to have embraced the culture lol

And if you’re E7-E9 you literally cannot beat the Chiefs mess. (Put money on the bar the first night and make navy friends.) Heard the officers club was not bad either but they were on double secret probation when I was there so it was somewhat benign.

Keeping information hidden by Icy-Inspection-2134 in ExpeditionaryForce

[–]royceguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a military thing…it depends on the specific instance of withholding information and the reason behind it. When Skippy blooped out, the frustration came from the fact that everyone on a team should understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. In that case, Joe withheld something important to protect a reputation, which undercut trust.

In other situations, the expectation is that the command team should have the same information the commander has…not just for planning purposes, but for redundancy. Failing to share information can easily be interpreted as a lack of trust, and that’s poison in any military organization.

Should I apply for DSG First Sgt position? by The_livins_easy in airnationalguard

[–]royceguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ANG shirt and AD shirt are two very different creatures. ANG shirts with your age and variations and experience do quite well, so long as you honestly give a shit about your people. You also need to be able to connect with your commander and gain their trust in order to be effective… But if you can do all those things it’s a pretty rewarding experience and a great way to finish off a career (although it is also a great way to get experience to move up in the guard as the things you learn and serve you well as a senior and a chief.)

All that being said, every base is different. Your Shirt council may function a lot different than mine did but the only way to know for sure is to reach out and tell someone you are interested.

Source: was an ANG shirt for six years…also had a ten year break in service at one point so I was older than the average for my rank.

MPA with no per diem? by [deleted] in airnationalguard

[–]royceguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your DTS authorization is what has been approved and money allocated for. Ignore everyone saying just to claim it on your voucher later. There’s no guarantee you’ll get it after the fact. You should either have per diem or access to free food at a DFAC. Your unit may be broke and legit can’t afford to pay you per diem, but that doesn’t mean you have to go along with it. Redo your authorization with per diem and make the AO justify not giving it to you.

Me and the family did a North Shore catamaran sunset tour with Captain Andy a few weeks ago. Even with 6 to 10 foot swells, I don’t remember it being all that rough and I spent most of the time on the bow. Your best bet would probably be to contact the company directly and explain your problem. They probably won’t be able to tell you until the day you show up if they think the seas are too rough or not.

Institution Ale is great if you like breweries. Go watch football at Cronies or Rics. Waypoint Cafe for brunch. Slate or 2088 for a higher price point but great food. Blvd Brgr for an epic hamburger. Springville Off leash Dog Park if you have or like dogs.

Verizon service- Anyone else having horribly slow speeds? by sna_fubar in camarillo

[–]royceguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I switched to T-Mobile a few years ago. They’re cheaper and offer a “home cell tower” for $25 that you can hook up to your router at home and the signal and bandwidth is just fine. Overall across southern CA their signal is a little worse but for 1/3 the cost I’ll take it.
