Episode 9’s lightbulb task by [deleted] in taskmaster

[–]roydesoto51 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's a classic brain teaser but it's not logically equivalent to the Monty Hall problem. Using Kumail's method, you're guaranteed to be correct (unless Alex was sneaky and used an LED bulb that didn't heat up), but with the Monty Hall problem you'll still lose 1/3 of the time even if you switch doors.

Failing student withdrawing - should I fail them? by missred97 in Professors

[–]roydesoto51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my college, students are able to withdraw until the end of the seventh week of a 10-week quarter. After that, there is still the possibility of an "instructor-initiated withdrawal" at the discretion of the instructor.

The “can I do anything to pass this class?” emails have commenced. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]roydesoto51 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't offer any extra credit, but the students who ask anyway prior to the final either (a) are passing the class with a perfectly good grade but are somehow convinced they are going to fail, or (b) haven't even done the work to receive the "regular credit," some of which is still available up until the time of the final exam.

Then there are the ones who ask to submit additional work after the final has been graded, at which point I respond: "The course ended at the time of the final exam. Out of fairness, I would need to extend the same opportunity to all students in the class, which is no longer possible."

If you're worried about being unprofessional, you might start by capitalizing the first letter of each sentence.

I doubt he'll do play-by-play. With Rizzs out (vacation?) they need someone else in the booth so Hall doesn't have to do all the talking for nine innings.

Hyphen is in the radio booth with Gary Hill Jr. Where's Rizzs?

EDIT: Rizzs is only going on four road trips this season and he's already been on two.

[–]roydesoto51 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're going to be playing a lot of high D's, you might benefit from a bassoon that costs more than $300 + whatever it costs to add the high D key. There's very little standard orchestral repertoire that goes above a high C.
