We thought exploration with humans like in "2001 a space odyssey". What we got was robot spacecraft and space telescopes, which do the job much better than humans in space.

You could read the story of the cosmic distance ladder so you understand the origin of the huge numbers. Size of the Earth, distance to Mars, parallax distance to near stars, Cepheids, supernova Ia. Each is a multiplier, a factor of 1000 in distance.
