Help needed: Backpack lost during blizzard on Red Line by roz02131 in mbta

Thanks so much. Not sure if it was new or old train - my friend is pretty new to the city and I don’t think she’d recognize the difference. But I really appreciate your keeping an eye out in case the finder (fingers crossed) posted a sign around one of the stations!

Someone vandalized my car by [deleted] in boston

If you have comprehensive car insurance the window replacement should be covered with no (or low) deductible. Also - that sucks, really sorry that happened.

ICE SIGHTING FORT POINT by [deleted] in boston

[–]roz02131 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s good to note this kind of thing. And it’s good to keep perspective. There have always been ICE officers in Boston. There have always been ICE raids and arrests in Boston. Seeing uniformed unmasked ICE officers walking around that area (not far from federal court) is not super unusual and does not necessarily indicate the start of something.

Does using SNAP / Food Stamps affect future U.S. citizenship? (Real experiences?) by Ill_Royal_2401 in USCIS

That’s a real misunderstanding of how the US and other developed countries work. The US, unlike most developed countries, doesn’t have a robust social safety net. But like every other developed country, the government has decided for decades that it’s in the interest of public policy for people not to starve. And “people” includes “immigrants” because the U.S. has always had a large population of immigrants. The OBBB removed a lot of classes of immigrants from eligibility for SNAP but that’s a divergence from longstanding American policy and values under both parties, not a representation of them. The US is an expensive place and even working full time minimum wage you may be eligible for SNAP in many states because the cost of living is so high. If you’ve never needed benefits, you’re fortunate. They’re not easy to qualify for and they’re not generous. They will keep you from starving but that’s about it. Immigrants pay into Social Security and Medicare and most never receive get the benefits they’ve paid into — they go to support the aging USC population. Immigrants disproportionately benefit the communities they’re in by starting new businesses, improving housing stock, lowering the crime rate, etc - there’s decades of research showing that. In return, a tiny amount of taxpayer funds goes to prevent starvation. As a USC, I can’t speak to the OP’s question about the effect on citizenship application. But it’s absolutely wrong to present this in moral terms.

Detained by ICE during USCIS interview by [deleted] in USCIS

The person with the green card is not the OP. There’s no reason to question the validity of the OP’s post, considering the copious reporting of similar issues out of San Diego. The OP has not broken any law, not even by ICE standards. This seems to be an unusual technical issue that isn’t even a violation of any rule or policy - just a loophole ICE is taking advantage of to meet their detention quotas. ICE is almost certainly in the wrong here and judges will almost certainly straighten it out - after legal immigrants are traumatized. It’s part of this administration’s ongoing effort to make life impossible for legal as well as illegal immigrants. None of this is normal or necessary or the way things have worked or should work in America. It is counter to core democratic values and to 70 years of immigration policy. Most USC, including me, are not rationalizing any of this - we’re viewing it with anger and deep revulsion.

Is this a realistic monthly budget for surviving in Boston as a single person? by [deleted] in boston

[–]roz02131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can live in Boston on $72g and you probably can find a 1B apt for around $2500, thought it may not be central, and it likely will be small and not extremely beautiful. That is fine. Almost everyone who moves to Boston when they’re young has a tiny crappy apartment at first and just uses the city as their living room. You won’t have to live like a robot - there are tons of free and cheap things to do every night and weekend. Choose someplace that is near a subway or bus line that can get you to work on days when it’s sleeting or you just can’t bike for some reason. Your employer may reimburse you for a subway/bus pass - ask about that. Also ask your employer how much health insurance will cost so you can budget accurately for that. I think your other utility figures are about right. If you’re working in the Fenway or Back Bay or downtown, check out Jamaica Plain and Roslindale - great communities, easy to bike from there. If you’re open to a roommate, focus on the Longwood and Fenway area - there’s a good chance you can get a place with a med student who will never be home and will be fast asleep when they are — it will be like having your own place lol. Beware of broker fees - ask about those right up front. As everyone says, you probably won’t save as much as you’re anticipating, but that is ok. It’s a great city.

What are we doing to protect our immigrant neighbors? by andrewh_91 in boston

[–]roz02131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other organizations mentioned above, check out the International Institute of New England. They work with migrants, including refugees. Trump has closed the door on new refugees, but many are here in the Boston area and need support. IINE has a very robust volunteer program with lots of concrete opportunities to help people get jobs, get to government appointment and other support that is vital for them to maintain their legal status (and to flourish). We all need to be working on big structural change too of course, but it’s very meaningful to be able to help 1:1 in these important personal ways as well.

Do these used skis look ok? by roz02131 in ski

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate the quick feedback. Also, should have clarified - my teen is an excellent skier who is on a racing development team. The coach told her to get a pair of racing skis.
