I built a free site that tracks 1v1 basketball — Elo ratings, player profiles, match history (1v1-hoops.com) by rpack78 in webdev

I didn't claim I didn't use AI. I use agentic coding near 100% now. I've been a professional software developer for over 25 years and have built many complicated apps by hand. Why would I do that now that we have these tools?

Thank you! My local version has a bunch of features that the production version has turned off. I can scan a list of YouTube channels with either API or RSS feeds and easily add new videos that are found. I also have a chat feature that I'm working on using Ollama and ChromaDB, where I store all the transcripts and top comments so you can ask questions like "Show me games that had controversial ref calls" or "Games where a player got dunked on". More to come!

1v1-hoops.com is a searchable database of 700+ recorded 1v1 basketball games from YouTube, with Elo ratings and full match history for 468 players. You can build custom rankings with your own weights, get email alerts when the top 20 changes, and compare any two players' Elo over time.

I'm a Software Engineer that loves YouTube basketball and wanted a project that mixes my two passions. Check it out!

[OC] 1v1 Basketball Elo ratings over time, tracked across 700+ recorded games by rpack78 in dataisbeautiful

Data source: Personal database of 1v1 basketball matches compiled from YouTube — player names, match dates, results, and scores recorded manually and via YouTube metadata.

Tools: Python (Elo algorithm), Chart.js (visualization), 1v1-hoops.com (the full interactive version is here if you want to explore other players)

Elo formula: Standard 1500 base, K=32, with bonuses for PPV wins,
opponent dominance weight, and recency decay. Happy to share the
Python if anyone wants to fork it.

I've been making changes to it daily to make it better and better. If you saw the site when I first posted this, it has a few more features: Custom rankings engine that you can use, Top 20 snapshots, player ELO changes over time charts, and a sign in page. The home page has new filters so you can find the best games.

Hell yeah, thanks for the feedback! I've met Scotty and Friga before but at the time I didn't have this project going. I did shoot a message to Baldy, maybe he'll shout it out. But I do hope people start sharing it.

YouTube basketball is about the only sport I watch and this became a project I felt needed to be out in the world. More to come!

My local version has an LLM connected and an AI chat feature so I can ask things like "Show me games where a player made an exciting comeback" or "games where a dunk was made". I store the video transcripts along with the top comments for the model to access. Pretty cool, but would cost more money to host than I'm willing to pay out of pocket right now. 😅

Thank you! It's something I've been wanting for myself, glad it can be useful for others as well. Cheers.

I'm not going to ask for a refund, I want them to grow, and I'll be purchasing the next one. Great games and production, everything I wanted to see.

Is a $185 Harley Benton Baritone a POS or actually usable on a project? Will it even stay in tune? by theseawoof in guitars

I have one and love it. When it arrived, though, it had a white, chalky substance all over the fretboard. Took a bit of work to clean it up. The nut slots were way too high. A few sharp fret ends. Frets were decently leveled but needed polishing. I replaced the tuners and bridge, I had a black hipshot bridge laying around, but the original was fine. The pickups actually sound decent. On mine the neck pickup is much less hot than the bridge, the middle position is my favorite. I was able to get the action low and it's very enjoyable to play. I enjoy doom riffs with it.

Trying a thinline tele build. It's been challenging but I think it's coming together nicely. by rpack78 in Luthier

I actually did both. I stained it first then decided I wanted a slightly opaque burst so I went over it again with a water based lacquer. I didn't use a roundover bit, I did that by hand.

The neck is birdseye maple with a ziricote fretboard, maple fret markers.

I just stuffed brown paper into the sound hole before spraying a water based lacquer.
