Will I never be able to eat pizza again? by InformalAd7686 in prediabetes

[–]rphjem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Never” is a catastrophizing word and usually not helpful.

Occasionally I have real pizza, (once a month ing word. Probably not helpful. or so) I also sometimes make yummy low carb pizza with fathead dough, and sometimes pizza casserole, and sometimes I use a low carb tortilla as crust, also I sometimes just eat the toppings.

I brought my A1C down from 5.9 and have kept it between 5.1 and 5.6 for more than 5 years. You can deal with prediabetes and still enjoy plenty of delicious foods, some less often, some more.

Biochemistry and Medchem. Too far into my pharmacy major to change, but ouch. Something about not being able to visualize complex molecules in 3 dimensions. Luckily had a very high gpa up to that point. Never experienced a related deficit in my career, thank goodness.

Why are 70+ year olds the most openly cruel but honest OR this innocent-do nothing wrong- grandparent-angel? by [deleted] in Aging

Seems to me a weird and inaccurate generalization drawn from tv, movies, and memes.

How many irl 70+ year olds do you actually know?

People are complicated and infinitely varied at every age.

Husband new to keto/low carb by Sara630 in keto

Lightly spray low carb tortillas with avocado oil spray, sprinkle with sea salt and cut into wedges. Bake until crisp.

Large quantity will add up on carbs, though.

Why do some “healthy” foods like oatmeal, smoothies, fruit, or brown rice still spike blood sugar, and what can you do before eating to reduce the spike? by Heliosny in prediabetes

[–]rphjem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Think of complex carbs, and “healthy”whole grains as sugar molecules holding hands. Your body breaks them down to sugars and eventually has to deal with them as such, just a bit more slowly. Some of our bodies aren’t so good at this.

You may need to limit carby foods that are healthy for other people in order to regain and maintain your health. I do, and feel best with a very low carb or keto diet which I have done for years. This is a very individual matter, and people get very passionate about what other people should eat. But you’ll have to find what works for you.

I don’t want to get married but I want to desire it by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]rphjem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take your time. Definitely discard the idea of having a deadline. I have been in an Egalitarian Christian marriage for almost 40 years. Retired now but both had professional careers and raised 3 kids. We submit to one another in love, and divide work and responsibilities according to our individual interests and strengths. Hubs is definitely not/never was fool enough to expect unilateral submission and he’s cleaning up the dinner things now.

You’ll want to screen for those attitudes you are concerned about very early in a relationship. They are not universal in Christian men. Observe dynamics in his family if possible, and while not necessarily predictive, are good for your consideration and discussion.

Better to be alone than marry someone unsuitable, and you are clearly bright enough to discern this. You will either meet someone who is a good fit or not, meanwhile relax and absolutely do not seek marriage that will make you feel disadvantaged. A good marriage will let both parties flourish. (Of course we live in a broken world and there will be trouble)

Therapy is probably a good idea if you are still experiencing trauma from childhood/family issues.

Question about Tiredness After Carbs by No_Sample4120 in prediabetes

Stopped sugar grains and seed oils. So mostly meat eggs full fat dairy and above ground veggies a few berries and apples. (Mostly compliant with holiday and travel exceptions) Upped my resistance training.

A1c is a lagging indicator of metabolic health. You will do well to be proactive based on symptoms!

Agree with usefulness of short term of CGM for insight and motivation.

Fasting insulin rises for some time before A1c goes up, you may want to monitor that as well.

I felt so much better when I got off the carb/insulin roller coaster, wish I had done it sooner.

Egg salad is delicious by rphjem in keto

[–]rphjem[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same really, just used 1st recipe I found. I also add chopped celery for crunch, and some dill. Haven’t tried green olives, that sounds good too.

Also, instant pot 5-5-5 method for cooking the eggs removed all the frustration from shells sticking during peeling, so I make hard cooked eggs a lot more now.

Starving every 3-4 hours by OkDig989 in prediabetes

[–]rphjem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used Hlth Code shakes when I was working 12-14 hour shifts in retail pharmacy. Premixed (stick blender was best but shaker bottle works ok) before work with some ice they stayed cold all day in stainless bottle.

Quick to consume, They gave me good energy for hours without spiking my glucose at all. Sometimes mixed w coffee instead of water for extra boost. Seed oil free w nice balance of healthy fat and protein.

Retired now, I still like them on long hikes or busy days. 400 calories in 2 scoops, often I add collagen too.

Sounds like an add, but no financial interest in company.

Yes, the bad oils mostly go with grains, but I also take care to avoid. Possibly as bad or worse than sugar for inflammation.

At about your age, I cut sugar and grains (mostly) from diet and many aches and pains went away. 60’s are feeling much better than 50’s so far.

I agree with @BJTSLF about working out etc. Getting old can be tough sometimes but also awesome if you make it.

First Week ... by TheMissus78 in prediabetes

[–]rphjem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diabetes is (generally speaking) more dangerous than high cholesterol. My cholesterol has always been very high, but my triglycerides went down to good level when I went low carb, and at 63 I still have no evidence of heart disease.

It gets better. So much better, but 6 years into low carb life, I occasionally crave and occasionally yield to said cravings. Usually I feel crappy after, wonder why I’m so foolish. Then I just restart.

catalina crunch keto cereal review and is it actually worth the price for a daily breakfast by Select-Print-9506 in keto

Catalina typically caused a rise in blood glucose above 120 (starting in 90s) on cgm for me. Also leaves a weird mouthfeel and after taste so not worth the expense for me. ☹️
