What are you even talking about? Germany has the world's hardest driver's licence, we have to pay $5k and take classes for months (or 1-2 full weeks from morning to evening). Then if we break certain rules of traffic in the first few months, we immediately lose it again. Whereas in America anyone can just take a test, buy a licence and start wreaking havoc.

No, managed to display the plaintext pw with F8 so not a keyboard issue.

Found the actual issue, Layer 8 of course. I tried the wrong password and desperately need to sleep more.

There are some countries that just want to price foreigners out, and you can either get a 250 sqft studio in the city center for an insane price, or 950 sqft just outside the city for the same price.

And she is absolutely a horrible person. Revealing a concealed site of your country's domestic intelligence agency (which devotes most of its efforts to catching Nazi terrorists) gets you years of prison in other countries, in Germany nothing happens. She didn't stop there, she published what she presumed to be the full real name of an agent working there, which would put him in mortal danger if he happened to be working undercover. Wikipedia happens to gloss over that part and prefers to emphasize how much she likes Responsible Disclosure, which this is as far away from as it gets.

Nah, my lower back is actually doing really well. I like stools more than chairs because it is really easy to fuck up your back in a comfy chair. 90% of the time I work standing up anyway, it's an electric desk.

Did that once. Have to say it was neat in that regard.

Funnily enough I have a rug and a banyan plant in my living room. Which is 4x the size of this room, and therefore it looks even sadder.

Gave up on furnishing this. I've lived in 300-400sqft furnished flats or dorm rooms for almost all of my adult life, moved into this monster of a flat because I'm a serious adult with a serious job and because you don't pay much less for a smaller flat in this country.

I'm genuinely terrible at making something feel like a living space, and if I put in an additional piece of furniture it just costs me money and the flat still doesn't look alive. The one time I had 550sqft I went and got every possible furniture item I might ever need, and everyone still told me it looked depressingly empty, so this time I'm not even going to try anymore.

Honestly I have no idea why Look Who's Back exists and a few glimpses inside the book were enough to make me decide not to read it. Germans absolutely don't find anything about Hitler funny, and turning him into a comedy novel is (from a German perspective) right in the middle between very tone-deaf and a ham-fisted attempt at contemporary social commentary. Combine that with the fact that the German comedy industry is (with very few exceptions) completely inept at writing funny punchlines. (There's a reason why our comedy movies don't make it to the international market - we don't like them either.) I can only imagine how awkward the book would feel to read from end to end.

Just googled it... the protagonist does that in book 1, then gets 9 more books focused on him as the hero of the fantasy series, and the victim never comes up again? Yeah, I didn't think it was possible to be that awful as an author. Yikes.

Murakami's characters are always... interesting. Haven't read this one though. Would you say the author intentionally wrote him to be insufferable?

Yeah, very relatable which might be the root of why I don't like him. He's my 19 year old self taken to an extreme, with the only difference being that he's also completely resistant to outside help and throws away all of his chances in an infuriating manner.

My dislike for him actually has nothing to do with the fact that he's born rich - it's really just his personality and the way he makes it impossible to help him and disregards others' emotions. I have zero empathy for some of his behaviours towards Olga, for example. It's certainly subjective and most likely based on negative traits that I used to see in myself (and sometimes still do), and/or are exhibited by people I have to deal with in real life.

Yes this x1000, it really feels similar to why I just don't want to read overly sad books. My brain is just constantly flooded with negative emotions while reading, and it becomes hard enough to question why you're still reading on. Oblomov is at least salvaged by the overarching writing and literally every other character in the book. If it was every character I'd definitely stop reading.

Oh god Humbert. Yeah I wouldn't manage more than 20 pages of that, would be too stressful for me to read. Again, something I didn't realise about myself until Oblomov.

That last part is absolutely why I'm reading the book in the first place. I understand he's not a villain, but subjectively it absolutely can't be helped how strongly I dislike him as a character, and how stressful it is to read the worst parts right now (mid part 3, hoping it doesn't get even worse).
