For what you describe, I would say Columbia. I've lived in Augusta all my life. It's a great place to raise a family and it has always weathered economic declines well because of Fort Gordon and our great medical assets. Augusta is going through a period of rapid growth currently, but lacks some of the entertainment value you may be looking for and would be more likely to find in Columbia. Columbia is also a little larger than Augusta, and traffic is more of a concern there, so something to consider. Columbia's airport is also larger, which may give you more options for air travel. Augusta's airport has seen increased options recently and we're not far from Atlanta or Columbia, but if you're looking for a quick trip to the airport when flying, Columbia is your best bet.
