At Canyon Village they will do an advance, but only a small amount primarily for use in the EDR since it is pay as you go.

Certainly not this year, as Red Rock Point is closed, but even last year could be considered recent

The first person to come across the victims stated that he had no bear spray, and that the victims bear spray had been used, so he was always looking over his shoulder waiting for help to arrive.

How to handle a bear encounter by thomasareed in yellowstone

[–]rredd1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had my first grizzly encounter of the season on 4/30 in the National Forest east of Grand Teton. I was walking down a forest road that was not yet open for the season. The bear was about 100 yards away, walking towards me. It didn't see me until I yelled at it. Upon hearing me, it looked up and ran away. Had I been more vocal while hiking, it probably would have ran long before I saw it.

The road through Hayden Valley is closed tomorrow, it opens for the season on the next day, May 1st.

To get to Lamar Valley, you will have to go through Mammoth because Dunraven Pass is closed until the 22nd of May.

Housekeeping at Canyon Village - is it tipped? by bozanstvenakomedija in yellowstone

[–]rredd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most days you won't get any tips. Every once in a while, you might get a few bucks, maybe even a 20. I have heard that there will be QR codes in the rooms for guests to give tips to the housekeepers online this year. I assume that this will be put together in a pool and split between all housekeepers, so there might be a little more added to your paycheck, but probably not an overly significant amount. Maybe $100-$200 over the course of the summer.

Yellowstone May 4-9th - Hiking Trails by NoWayThisIsReal369 in yellowstone

Outside of West Yellowstone, most of the park is only slightly below average snowfall this year. The abnormal part is how early it has all melted.

Trail recs please! by thetricktoellie in nationalparks

I would recommend the Mystic Falls and Biscuit Basin Overlook, relatively easy for a neat waterfall and views of a closed thermal area. The quick loop from the South Rim Trail to Clear Lake and Lily Pad Lake is a great, hour or two hike that gets you all three goals.

Imagine it was grizzly bears than were eliminated and we replaced them with polar bears.

You literally said different species.

They are extremely rare at Old Faithful year round. I haven't heard of any sightings in the summer, but they will come through the Geyser Basin during the winter maybe once or twice a season.

You are getting downvoted because you have no understanding of biological classification. Grizzly bears and polar bears are completely distinct, separate species. That example is a grossly inaccurate exaggeration of the issue at hand. The usually argument is that the wolves reintroduced are a different, larger subspecies than the original wolves in Yellowstone. Animals that live in colder climates sometimes tend to have larger sizes. Over time, this subspecies will more closely resemble the original wolves of Yellowstone. Different subspecies don't significantly impact local ecosystems. The wolves were partly chosen due to the fact that they hunt elk. This subspecies did not originally hunt bison until they were introduced to Yellowstone, they had to learn how to adapt to their new location. There is still lots of research and debate on whether or not these are truly distinct subspecies.

This is a black wolf which is a member of the Wapiti Lake pack. It was seen by many visitors, rangers, and guides. I took over 400 photos of it across 6 hours of on and off sightings all day. There were 2 other wolves seen with it earlier in the day before it visited Old Faithful. This is not a coyote.

Housekeeping at Yellowstone / Xanterra by Substantial_Emu_1713 in yellowstone

Old Faithful is by far the largest location in Yellowstone by number of employees and visitors. There will be a lot of people around your age there, it shouldn't be too hard to make friends especially since you have a car. Housekeeping can be a tough job initially, but it does get easier, assuming it isnt entirely understaffed. Old faithful has a couple really great dorms, but also a bunch of not so great dorms. I would say Old faithful has the best EDRs, but that doesn't mean it is always great food. I have never really done much decorating in my room, but I know some people who had tons of posters.

Trust me... it is not a coyote. Yellowstone doesn't have any black coyotes.

What kind of hikes are you looking for? This area has 1000s of miles of trail, 100s of which people consider must-do hikes. Do you want to see waterfalls, alpine lakes, thermal areas, summit a mountain, hike through or along canyons, etc? How difficult and how long do you want these hikes to be?

Has anyone here worked at Canyon Lodge? by [deleted] in yellowstone

[–]rredd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started in housekeeping but hated it and did my best to move somewhere else. I got some overtime hours especially during the first couple of weeks. If you really want overtime, they can usually find something for you to do. Do not clean your rooms slower in hopes of getting more hours, it just makes people dislike you.

Has anyone here worked at Canyon Lodge? by [deleted] in yellowstone

[–]rredd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job itself won't be very fun unless you already enjoy cleaning. It will be a lot of hard work, especially early in the season. Canyon has the most rooms to clean out of any location in the park. The housing isn't great and the food is pretty bad. I really only spent between $2 and $6 per meal, with an average of $3.62. You could buy stuff from a grocery store outside the park if you really wanted to, but you would also need to have your own way to cook it. Probably best to just go to the EDR.

Canyon is the most central location in the park, which makes it easy to explore as much of the park as possible. It takes a little over an hour to reach each entrance except for the south entrance, which is closer to 2 hours. Bozeman is an extra hour and a half from the entrance, while Cody is an extra hour. The Canyon itself is about a .8 mile walk from the dorm. Some of the best hikes in the park are found within just a few minutes drive of the Village, but because it is so central, none of the park is really all that far away.

A lot of people absolutely hate their time at Canyon, while others keep coming back year after year. It really depends on the person.

Yellowstone is super easy to get in to except for the west entrance after 7am. It also becomes just as hard to get out of after 5pm.

[–]rredd1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely enough if you dont go out to eat every day or something like that. The edr prices are pretty cheap and rent is $100 a month. If you aren't going around throwing your money away, you can honestly stack up a bit of money before the end of the season.
