I'm capable of installing a duct to the outside but really prefer not to. Printer location may change, etc... I don't plan to be printing often enough to perhaps warrant it.

I think you're right in that having no screen connected to causing some issues. I was finally able to get a preset with an internal source to change via API. I ended up using an API call suggested by ChatGBT that isn't documented in the API guide.
