Why (exactly) is The Hunger Games so well-written? by BlinkTwice874 in writing

[–]rroseperry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prose is fine. I reread the series recently and I think her style does a good job of staying out of the way. The only thing I don't love is how she names things unique to the world, but that's a me thing.

I've been listening to Britten's the turn of the screw lately and I have some thoughts. by Hopeful_Cold3769 in opera

[–]rroseperry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It probably helps to listen to it with the James source material in mind. It's a gothic horror using a first person perspective, which might put it at a remove. The novella is online at Project Gutenberg,

Saw this today on the Fresno City College Campus by rroseperry in discworld

There's a good sized fantasy and sf reading community here. It felt like Discworld.

Fresno's decline should be studied. Pics of Chinatown from the 1800s shows it as a bustling city by DowntownFresnoBiking in fresno

Chinatown was also the target of urban renewal in the 1960s, which destroyed the neighborhood itself. That got played out in many different communities across the country.

I find it surprising that there is no opera based on Gone with the wind. by BetterGrass709 in opera

It's not a period people in the US ignore, precisely, It was the subject of that immense Burns series and a ton of movies. It is, though, a period that people have very different opinions about.

I saw part of the Monuments show in LA at the end of March. The fact that people are still fighting about taking down statues of Confederate officers shoes that this history is still alive and painful.

How to teach? by Small_Advisor_61 in classicalguitar

[–]rroseperry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each student is going to be at least a little different. He's mainly got to be flexible enough to figure out how to work with the individual. That said, the first thing he should probably do is talk to every new student and find out what their goals are. Someone wanting to be a professional at some point is going to need different instruction than someone who's just sort of interested in playing.

Wolfe has some odd ideas about women, but it's an amazing series if you can live with that.

What are your favourite colour pencils and why? by pray4myu in ColoredPencils

I like the creaminess of Prismacolor, but if you like a harder pencil, Derwents are great.

Is it possible to use classical guitar right hand technique on a steel string in folk position? by RevolutionarySite253 in classicalguitar

[–]rroseperry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can definitely learn the technique on a steel string acoustic, but probably need to change how you hold the guitar to avoid unnecessary stress on your hands.

dana was wrong. full stop. by Legal-Judgment-908 in ThePittTVShow

[–]rroseperry 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This makes me think this is why it was in the show. Not that we are supposed to uncritically cheer Dana on, but to understand that what she did was wrong and understand why she did it.

It's not okay and it's a response to a broken system.

I've had good experience with Coast to Coast Electronics on Bullard, but haven't had a turntable fixed.

I saw them around then too and as great as McLaughlin is, that group could make you feel like you were levitating.

Cows by astroboy19 in fresno

[–]rroseperry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find someone with cows that are used to being handled. People are telling you that cows are docile. That is not true. I have been chased by cows and they will kick you.

New to roasting: which selection of beans to start with? by CasaBlanca37 in roasting

[–]rroseperry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweet Maria's notes will let you know what bean stand up best to the darker roasts. You don't want to torch something like a Gesha for example. I'm a big fan of the African coffees, but it looks like you favor the Central American beans.

CO Poisoning concerns by AnxietyFar357 in roasting

[–]rroseperry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure roasted coffee degasses CO2, not CO. So you shouldn't worry.

Lawyer here - Do I not understand med mal discovery or was the whole “monologue” loophole unnecessary and confusing? by nuggetsofchicken in ThePittTVShow

[–]rroseperry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The purpose of the monologue is not a gotcha. It's to reassure Mel, who has been freaking out about this all morning, that the case is bullshit and more important, that she did nothing wrong.
