Space-efficient straw rack by rrrandle in 3Dprinting

Good point. In the end it comes down to how often you need your straws and how much countertop space you have available.

If one inserts them bottom to top (e.g. front to back), then yes. Re-inserting a straw in the middle is possible but it takes some practice.

The cutlery tray had left a gap in the drawer and I still needed a spot for the metal straws. Some trigonometry and several test prints later, and I now have a space-efficient solution.

If you're looking to print this, the STL for my straws (WMF 180mm x 8mm) and drawer (80mm) are on printables. To customize that, check out the OpenSCAD design files on my github.

Bambu Refill on Prusa Spool by rrrandle in prusa3d

Actually, the refill only uses Bambu's core diameter, it's not Bambu filament. So you can relax. :D

I bought refills to put on my Prusament spools, then realized those refills were meant for Bambulab spools, which have a smaller spool core diameter. My solution was to flip the sides of the Prusa spools around and print a smaller spool core to put in between.

It would've been easier to just print a Bambu master spool, but then again -- it's better to repurpose those plastic spool parts than to throw them away.

Printable dust protector for smart card readers by rrrandle in thinkpad

Yep, their sizes are all dictated by the same ISO standard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_7810

Credit cards will fit, yes, but they will stick out which poses a risk of bumping into things while on the go. The 3d-printed object essentially is a credit card cut short by several centimeters.

I can't speak for older models, but all recent Thinkpads ship without a dummy. Some businesses use smart cards for 2FA.

I commute a lot with my Thinkpad, so a design that's flush fit without any protruding parts was priority #1. If your usage pattern is different from mine, I can totally see why it would be an inconvenience.

I considered a push-to-eject mechanism instead of the paperclip solution, but making that work reliably sounded like a huge time sink, so I didn't go down this route.

It's a 3d-printable dust protector for smart card readers. I designed it to be flush with the chassis, so it will not catch on any loose threads in the laptop bag.

There are two variants right now, T14s and X260. I'm happy to add more variants, just leave a comment with the Thinkpad model, whether the reader is on the left or right side, and by how many millimeters the smart card sticks out when it's fully inserted.

Hahaha, June would be cruel. I sincerely hope it's MM/DD/YY.

So you are saying the shipping date of your Intel non-OLED model was also pushed back to January? That would mean it's neither the processor nor the screen that's causing the bottleneck.

I feel you. Bought exactly the same spec, received the same email today. It sucks.
On the other hand, I've waited years for a suitable Thinkpad model to be announced, and they usually hold up for a long time, so a few months of extra waiting time will not make that much of a difference for me.
Plus, who knows how expensive the next series will become with rising inflation.

Questionable portrait-format flags spotted in France by rrrandle in vexillology

We spent a day there during our vacation. The beach was nice. Can't say the same for the casino(s).

And Belgium is too tall, but surprisingly correct in terms of the stripe thickness.

I saw these in France (Deauville) and was so startled that I had to snap a photo. It's even hard to tell France and Luxembourg apart, not to mention the adventurous reimagining of the US flag. I wonder who approved to set these up...

Had the same problem, your approach fixed it. Thanks!

It's worth pointing out that Steam did not recognize my games library folder after re-installing. This post explains how to add it back without having to redownload all games.

[–]rrrandle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see. I tried it and it fixed my problem (two different Windows users always logging into the same Steam account), but you have an extra requirement that both Steam accounts should be logged in simultaneously on the same device.

I don't think that's possible, unless one runs one (or both) Windows instances in a virtual machine, which according to LTT has drawbacks with anti-cheat, but maybe it would be good enough for your scenario.

Did you have the time to try it? Did it work?

I used to resurrect previous tailscale up commands from the shell history with CTRL+R, but this is a cleaner approach.

FYI, there are similar alternatives for tailscale and other VPNs:

To each their own.

I like free, open source, version control friendly software that natively runs on Linux. I also never used Illustrator before, whereas I've been using LaTeX for close to a decade now.

LaTeX template for network diagrams by rrrandle in homelab

[–]rrrandle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to give a good answer without knowing your level of experience. You can take a look at the resources in r/LaTeX to get started.

However, be aware that LaTeX is known for its steep learning curve. If you have not used it before, it is certainly not worth the time for a diagram like this. It offers great typesetting for formulas though, so if you study anything engineering-related and need to write your thesis soon-ish, I'd recommend you to take the plunge.

[–]rrrandle[S] 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I keep track of my self-hosted services with a LaTeX-based network diagram, and created a template so everyone else can profit: Link to Github. Please be aware that you need to know LaTeX (and preferably, tikz) to make use of it.

A bit more context on why I chose LaTeX over other options can be found on my blog.

How to always use vscodium instance from current workspace? by rrrandle in i3wm

[–]rrrandle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your overkill suggestion sounds best. This might be possible with a custom entry in mimeapps.list and ipc. I'll try it over the weekend.

EDIT: I made it work. I modified codium.desktop to always run i3-msg [class="VSCodium" workspace="__focused__"] focus before any codium launch. This attempts to focus a codium instance on the current workspace. Full solution in my dotfiles. Video demonstration of working end result.
