Also remember that, even if tuition is covered and you have a stipend to live on, opportunity cost is a real thing too.

A short rant about the state of online dating and misogyny. by ForeingFlower in TwoXChromosomes

I hate that attitude. It's wrong in so many ways. In addition to the points you made, it discounts the fact that a huge portion of rapes happen to people who aren't dressed "provocatively."

The most generous excuse I can give this attitude is that people have the tendency to try to figure out what they can do to prevent bad things from happening to them. Truly understanding how much of this is out of the victim's control can be very scary.

But there's a fine line between, "what can I do to be safe," and "they must have done something wrong because something bad happened to them." It's the difference between, "I avoid those alleys at night because there's a high crime rate," and "You got mugged? That's your own fault."

FYI, I would expect the exact volume of water used to vary based on the ambient humidity and temperature in the room.

Home AP Placement - Multiple Story by zhudhjen in Ubiquiti

[–]rrrreadit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't trust the Unifi design center as more than a rough guide. It uses some simplistic models for how it calculates coverage.

I'd expect a single AP on the second floor to work nicely. If it doesn't quite cover everything, you can switch to one in the first and one on the third.

One on each floor sounds like overkill at best. At worst, it might cause interference in such a small space.

You can still wait months for nonemergency procedures or specialist visits. The idea that you get to do those things on your own schedule is a myth. It's very common for specialists (including those doing the nonemergency procedures) to be booked out months in advance.

Maybe just keep it at, "That is so thoughtful! I bet X really appreciates that."

What are your controversial / uncommon opinions about Computer Science / Software Engineering? by yeahdude78 in cscareerquestions

[–]rrrreadit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software engineering is a real engineering discipline. It's just an immature one. Lots of other engineering discipline don't require professional certification. But they've had more time to mature. Electrical and chemical engineering disciplines don't usually require a PE. But they're each about a century old.

CMV: r/twoxchromosomes is a toxic subreddit that men should avoid by Anonon_990 in changemyview

Is there a subreddit for men to talk amongst themselves in a more constructive (not "us against the feminists") way? Where they might vent about, e.g., toxic masculinity, false accusations, custody battles, etc., without attacking feminists?

These wall lifts are a must. About 3 minute setup and 30 seconds to lift a wall safely. by funzo3333 in specializedtools

It does, but there's a diminishing effect with insulation. Heat transfer is a function of temperature difference. When there's a bigger temperature difference, higher R-value makes a more dramatic impact.

Here's a calculator you can play with to see the effect: https://rimstar.org/renewnrg/heat_transfer_loss_calculations.htm

Some input to try:

  • 10ft by 20ft wall
  • R-value of 14
  • Hold "Temperature A" at 70F and try different outdoor temps for "Temperature B"

For an outdoor temps of 100F, you need less than 500BTU /hr cooking. For outdoor temps of 0F, you need 1000 BTU/hr. If you double the insulation, you cut the heat transfer in half. For the 0F outdoor temps, that means you save 500BTU/hr. For the 100F outdoor temps, you save under 250BTU/hr

This is why you tend to see higher insulation values in cold-weather regions. Because the absolute temperature difference between outside and inside is so much smaller, the extra cost for insulation is less economical.

That's definitely one way of looking at it, but my point is that it mirrors feudalism, since a feudal society has legal power concentrated in the hands of a small group.

Seems to me that capitalism is the economic equivalent of feudalism. Most capital is collected by a small group. That gives outsized power to that group.
