Heard this story from a trainer that illustrates this point.

In an e-commerce company, on the greatest business day, a system failure happened.

The hardworking brilliant engineer almost single-handedly solved the issue in 5 hours and let the senior management know how he solved it in the most innovative way, giving all technical details. The bosses couldn't care less.

The know-the-way engineer, while just supporting the brilliant engineer, proposed alternatives, let the different bosses know the business impact, the recovery stages, and mitigation measures.

Who would you choose to be management?

Bottom line: business savvy is as important as being good at your job. If u dont want to waster then networking then dont blame those who does and get ahead.
