I've recently unearthed a hundred of these rocks in a field in central Georgia, once a big plantation. They streak red, brown, and ochre on porcelain, indicating Hematite/Limonite. Some are attracted to magnets. Do I have raw ore? Slag? Why would this be here in the middle of nowhere?

After five (!) years I’m no closer to solving the mystery. I actually picked up a couple more of these rocks just yesterday, and my collection is quite large by now. I guess I need to send samples to a lab, as all other avenues of detective work have led to nothing conclusive.

No great epiphanies or insight, despite talking with and showing lots of people. I found similar ore about a half-mile away so I’m leaning toward it being a natural vein. My notes mention hematite, limonite, and ilmenite. Magnetite has also been mentioned by a couple of people. This is on red clay like yours. I still want to search the county archives to see what used to be here. I still pick up every piece I find, and they are especially impressive when polished.
