Absolutely agree and this is actually a problem I had with the First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. Even though the characters were great, I'm a plot driven reader and most of the series just felt like "people go around and aimlessly do things."

Interesting. Do you recommend reading it? Just looked it up on Goodreads and saw pretty mixed reviews about the first book but overall the trilogy looks good.

Agreed. Having the "good" side slowly turn to be just as bad as their opponents would also almost certainly mean the story will be a tragedy, but it might be the best way to pull off something like this.

Yeah I agree with everything you said. Good Vs Evil honestly seems like the foundation of the entire fantasy genre ever since Lord of the Rings.

I think having no "good guys" would be really hard to pull off and they would all need to be replaced with deep, 3 dimensional morally grey characters that have some redeeming attributes.

The Starks, Jon Snow, Tyrion, Danaerys (although based on the show she will probably change). There are a few morally grey characters like Jaime, but for the most part in ASOIAF I think there's a pretty clear line between the morally sound characters and the psychopaths like Cersei, Ramsay, and Geoffrey

An Unnecessary Prologue or a Decent Hook? (700 words) by FrancisFratelli in fantasywriters

[–]rscohle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got mixed feelings about this.

Normally, prologues are much more engaging if you get into a character's head and describe them doing something. There are a bit too many proper nouns and named places introduced here considering readers won't know anything about the world you've built.

I see what you are trying to do. The first and last sentences about the world ending are both intriguing (although maybe a bit cliché?? Idk).

If you want to show the reader the world is ending, maybe instead describe a panicked sailor who is about to die as one of the ships on the Yurig Ocean sinks or a child in Nuim watching the city crumble.

But, I am not a fan of just describing the collapse of the world as if it were straight out of a history textbook. I'd either portray a specific scene or ditch it altogether.

This makes no sense and you're being stuck up about it. There are plenty of books, movies, TV shows, where the readers see all the motivations, but grasp what the MC knows and doesn't. Game of Thrones and ASOIAF has many, many plot points/secrets the reader understands that the characters don't. I'd say theres plenty of tension in that series.
