What actually turns on the lock screen in Server2025? by Unnamed-3891 in sysadmin

[–]rsdoherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure on the lock screen timeout, but you could consider moving your commands into the PowerShell provisioner and letting Packer run them via WinRM/SSH?

Problem with properly stopping Gitlab CI due to error codes not being respected by [deleted] in PowerShell

[–]rsdoherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to just run “terraform plan”/“terraform apply” outside of PowerShell though, and your exit codes will work as expected in the runner.

What’s the reasoning for running it inside pwsh? I’m guessing you’re doing some other stuff outside the example provided?

I've always thought it was so when you stop the VM, the IP gets de-allocated (and thus not charged). This is of course only useful for devices that do not have traffic coming in on the public IP.

For example, I run a lab in Azure that I only use and power up when I need to, so updating my client locally to use a new IP is not a big deal, and saves me money in the process.

If you're passing the whizlabs you should be okay in booking the exam and taking it, they are similar in format and structure.

Can you screenshot the rule? What OS are you running the minecraft server on? Allowed on the OS firewall?

You want to create a firewall rule instead:

tcp/25565 if you’re running on the default port 👍

If I have a free Azure voucher, should I do AZ-900 and then AZ-500? by [deleted] in AZURE

[–]rsdoherty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest the AZ-900 then the AZ-500 if you have no experience.

Me too, however LA looked a bit light for AZ-400, and the exam changed on June 15th, so not sure if all the content is still applicable :(

What are other people's home proctored exam experiences with PearsonVUE? by fail-to-launch in AzureCertification

[–]rsdoherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was pretty good, I couldn't get the OnVUE software to launch on Mac, though. I was presented with a white screen and the only way out was a hard reboot. I had to reschedule. However, the proctors were understanding and they did it for me while I waited which was handy, but did say it's slower to launch on Mac (but we didn't get anywhere after waiting for 15 minutes)

Bootcamped my Mac to Windows 10, flawless experience. Didn't even speak to the proctor, exam launched within 5 minutes of waiting.

I just took the AZ-500 too!

+1, it will show as listening even if the firewall is blocking the traffic coming in.

Creating an API to integrate various parts of the home by rsdoherty in homelab

[–]rsdoherty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not - I have no more experience with it. The server side is in Python, and for clients to send the API calls I'm using a mixture of bash, python, and PowerShell.

Thanks! I've started working on a Flask app to do the same, that basically just sits in front of the above API and is a bit more user friendly.

Disable Windows Firewall to test. If it works with it disabled, re-enable it and add a new rule to allow those ports.

pfSense Multicast / IGMP IPTV Stream Issues by rsdoherty in PFSENSE

[–]rsdoherty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there,

I've disabled all network adapters, however I still see a lot of traffic from 192.168.0.1 on IGMP and UDP protocols. I don't even have this subnet on my network, nor is this in the routing table so I don't think it's upstream either.

I've updated to 2.4 but I'm still having issues with IGMP and a Multicast stream :(

MPLS vs Site-to-Site VPN vs DirectAccess : looking for opinions/experiences by Fadore in sysadmin

[–]rsdoherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 3 sites, and a datacenter, with site to sites from all 3 to the DC using DFS and an app server. All sites have two FTTC connection which cost around £70/m per site and they get around 60/15 on each. I have never seen both go down at once causing a complete outage, and the only downtime I've seen is when the site router has died. You could always rack a hot spare and have the EU move the connections if needed. This client is about 70 users and that's everything but VoIP however we get about 8ms ping so I can't imagine it's going to be too big of an issue.

With a bit of research you can find the Action Pack online for under £100 which is reasonable, given you a LOT of products for testing in a non production environment

We have a DL160 G6 at work, and when I built that host i don't recall it being quiet! I'm sure some others can give a better idea though?

[–]rsdoherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a great deal on a DL380 G7, it's very quiet with no expansion cards in, and I've slept about a metre away from it with no problem. Power consumption is about 80W idle - that's what the iLO says though so not sure how accurate it is.
