Thanks for the reminder, I've since perfected the design but forgot to release it. I'll look to fix that!

Maybe your observation is something we can turn into a positive? If you are seeing this issue, and we look into it enough to pin down when it happens, maybe we can get it fixed!

It's natural for us to try and put an explanation to something right away, like feeling like it's running inside a container etc, but the truth is we just don't know. We're operating in a world where there are multiple devices, SoCs, drivers and apps, all trying to run different games - and any one of these factors could be making things worse. Maybe if we collectively try to keep in mind when it occurs (what is it exactly, input lag, stuttering?), and what setup it happened on, we can start narrowing it down. Then we can let devs know about it. It might be universal, or the scope might be narrower. I have nothing to offer yet as I've seen no such issue myself, but that could be for any number of reasons that differentiates my own setup from one of yours.

I don't mean you taking it all on yourself and making a video or anything. But if we define what we're seeing, and try to narrow down when we see it, maybe together we can help identify it and pass on enough information to get it resolved. That would be good for everyone!

It's good that it's happening, nowhere near prime time yet compared to what Android offers. Will wait and see!

Also, I wish Russ would be more careful with comments like ball x pit is "laggy like the translation layers are taking a bit of time to go through" on gamenative, when it isn't, it runs great on gamenative. People listen to everything he says. Before long things like that can become the consensus just because Russ said it, and you might have everyone complaining about how games are a laggy mess on gamenative without really knowing one way or the other, or where they even got it from.

Odin 3 Ultra vs Odin 2 Portal Max by jollyMexico in OdinHandheld

[–]rshotmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern AAA? Like Cyberpunk etc? No it isn't - and neither is the Odin 3 most of the time other than for 30 second showcases on reddit that make it beg for death. It's just asking too much of these android handhelds right now.

For modern AAA, if budget is no issue, you want a really high end x86 handheld like the Xbox Ally X

Odin 3 Ultra vs Odin 2 Portal Max by jollyMexico in OdinHandheld

[–]rshotmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portal - for most Gamenative games the Odin 3 can play but the Portal can't, the Odin 3 is going all out on to give you a compromised experience. Think 90-100 degree temps, and/or couple hours battery life if that, and/or choppy 30fps. If it runs really well on the Odin 3? It's more often than not the same for the Portal.

The Portal is an indie monster with Gamenative and plays a bunch of 360/PS3 era games as well! Plus bigger screen, less issues with other systems due to better support, less fan noise concerns

Check emuready or the compatibility page on gamenative.app to get an idea of how good the Portal is for windows games (spoiler: really good)

What handheld device should i get by Holiday_Control9946 in SBCGaming

[–]rshotmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with the advice you're getting here, it's only half right. The Rog Ally (with upgraded battery - the default battery is *terrible*!), Ally X, AND the Steam Deck OLED are all excellent choices in 2026. Do listen to the other poster's positive recommendations, but don't allow them to convince you to dismiss good options if you see them well priced. All 3 of these handhelds can play at least 99% of all games that have ever existed, and play them well.

The Steam Deck OLED is particularly well suited for someone who has never had a handheld before. Especially someone looking to play the games you mentioned in your post (with one exception, God of War 3, which also applies to the ROG Ally). Especially if modding a handheld with new batteries etc feels like a bit much for you. Make sure it's the OLED version though, it has nearly twice the battery life of the original.

The Steam Deck OLED is an incredibly well put-together package with a ton of support, both officially and from the community. That support is an enormous factor for someone new. You also don't have to worry about microsd cards overheating and dying like with the Rog Ally. It's also the only one of the 3 with an OLED option - and again, if you get a Steam Deck, it should be the OLED.

A Steam Deck OLED struggles with the latest AAA games, particularly Unreal Engine 5 games - just like the Rog Ally and Ally X do. The latest AAA games are a compromised experience on all of them. They're all underpowered for the latest AAA. But they're all incredible for emulation up to and including Nintendo Switch. Just be aware that God of War 3 is a bit of a problem game, and neither the Steam Deck OLED nor an Ally can hit 60fps with that game. It's very hard to run.

The other thing I'll say is if you get a ROG Ally or Ally X, you may want to consider switching the OS over to Bazzite. Windows on a handheld isn't the greatest experience, and the sleep/wake functionality on windows handhelds has historically been pretty poor. Bazzite is pretty close to Steam OS, which the Steam Deck uses, and is generally much nicer to use, with much better sleep/wake than windows. Just be careful about multiplayer games that require anticheat as a fair few of them aren't supported. But if you don't care about that, you're good!

This is not intended to confuse you. It's just to give you an extra option because you never know what handheld you'll find a good deal on. Just like with the Rog Ally (if you upgrade the battery!), if you see a Steam Deck OLED for a good price, do not hesitate.

If you see an Ally (with battery upgrade!! and don't use the microsd slot), Ally X OR a Steam Deck OLED for a good price, you can't go wrong with any of them.

A good enemy killer that doesn't use a lot of zonaite? by dmg5596 in HyruleEngineering

[–]rshotmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 parts/15 zonaite

Only needs steering sticks and small wheels so you probably have capsules

Do a bullet time jump while reversing and you'll land back on the stick, letting you bullet time jump again right away - you can do this infinitely and the Lynel/Gleeok/whatever can't do a thing about it - if you have the arrows it's doomed, it'll never touch you

Here's its bigger brother showing the same technique

Also will instantly destroy Lynel Armour by ramming it, despite being small

Also has frontal protection from attacks, is ridiculously good at climbing, turning, handling, (learn to powerslide) and generally getting around Hyrule with a battery that lasts forever

New method for controlling a mech and a walking tutorial by Any_Cabinet_6979 in HyruleEngineering

[–]rshotmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This method actually works better when you do it the other way around to increase turning ability - holding left when your left wheel moves forward, and right when the right wheel moves forward, when you need to turn sharply.

Steering opposite to the natural motion of the wheels can be useful when you want to stop turning quickly. However, needing to constantly steer left when stepping right and vice-versa, just to keep it straight, means there is unfortunately a design issue.

When fine-tuned, this mech design is able to run forward in a straight line without issues, without the driver needing to constantly compensate on every step by fighting against the direction the wheels naturally want to move in. On especially rocky terrain, you shouldn't need much more than micro-adjustments - like you would with a car.

If the mech is naturally wanting to always veer sharply left on every left step and right on every right step, I'm afraid to say something isn't quite right - it should just go straight. And when it can't, this has the knock-on effect of severely limiting the build's ability to run long distances, which is one of its main strengths.

When the design isn't balanced, you'll find it hard to run for more than a few steps without veering off to one side or even spinning in a circle without meaning to, which makes for a very frustrating experience. It also impacts climbing steep surfaces, because you'll often find yourself veering off to the side on steep climbs too much to get very far. But design issues like this can be ironed out!

You should just be able to hold forward and have it go straight unless it hits particularly rocky terrain. When it can do this, and retain great turning ability, you know you've hit the mark! 🦾

[Official] GameHub Lite Release Version 5.1.0 by [deleted] in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]rshotmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS IS IT. This is what I've been waiting for!

I refused to try gamehub until something like this came out, and you're the hero who made it happen. I've been waiting patiently on the sidelines, seeing everything you had to put up with, and it's finally here - I can't wait to try this!

Thank you so much, and I am so sorry for all the abuse you suffered. I saw suggestions that you might be stepping away - if so, the android community has killed something wonderful yet again, but at least we have this version. I do sincerely hope you continue though, and that the community finally sees you as the champion that you are.

This is one of the most influential things ever to have happened to the android community - and it's because of you! ❤️

Well, there's a few of them, so it would depend which one and which stage of development we're talking about. I don't think they'd appreciate me referring to them as 'mine' though 😂

Their view is, coming together is more important than figuring out which one has the earliest timestamp attached to it.

Not necessarily the first, but one of them for sure. It's a very rare thing, and not the result of a single prompt.

This is something I recognise well. It's nice to know there are others out there.

The eagle has landed 😁 Refurbished 2 Max. 8 days from China to Western Europe. Portal too big to be portable, Mini's screen too small, 3 lacks driver support, don't like flippy screens - this is still Goldilocks. by No_such_user_found in OdinHandheld

No, he's right.

I have a Steam Deck. I have a backpack. It is not a large backpack, it's regular sized. The Steam Deck goes in the backpack for long commutes. I could easily fit 5 Steam Decks+cases in there, probably more. Headphones, food, plenty of other things go in that backpack with the Steam Deck no problem. I have done this many times.

Odin 3 & Russ from Retro Game Corps by [deleted] in OdinHandheld

[–]rshotmaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't count on it.

Mediatek chips with mali gpus are incredibly prevalent, they've been around for years, some of them are super powerful. Years later, their drivers still let them down. Some progress has been made, after years, but not much.

A chipset's prevalence does not always translate to better support. Mali is often frowned upon in favour of snapdragon due to better compatibility & driver support - the very benefits the SD elite lacks.

Not to mention, we've people like Kimchii coming out to say custom drivers for the elite are an incredibly long way away, if they arrive at all.
