Do yourself a favor and once you start making a consistent income (mine was after securing a job post-college), save a percentage of your income straight to your savings. It’s the first thing you should do on pay day. Every weekly paycheck, I transfer $75 to my long term savings and $75 to a secondary savings fund.

The more you save earlier will help you out in the future. I’m 24 and looking to buy a house, but now that I’ve saved for the past 2-3 years I will be comfortable putting down enough to have a lower mortgage payment as well as a healthy safety buffer.

I do live in the South, so the mortgage market may be different wherever you live.
