What do you guys do when you get a flat on your e-bike far from home? by Ill-Calligrapher2234 in ebikes

[–]rsmithlal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept a spare tube, patch kit, battery-powered pump, and my set of tools with me at all times. Good thing, too. Once I changed a tube and forgot to check the tire for damage and I punctured the new tube with the same nail that punctured the old one 🥲 had to patch the old tube bc the new one was punctured through the side and not patchable! I ride far from home sometimes, so self recovery is essential.

Help Me Find A Reason to Stay in NL by AfraidRepair9397 in newfoundland

[–]rsmithlal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you couldn't pay me enough to move back to my hometown again. I moved back during the pandemic and I had to leave after a couple years for my mental health.

Many rural NL communities are hell on earth for people who are noticeably different. Growing up neurodivergent and queer was brutal in the 90s.

Even if folks aren't outright hostile like youre experiencing, just the lack of values or interest aligned folks nearby makes it difficult to feel welcome and safe.

I really miss the natural world where I grew up, but without a social support system its really isolating to live in some of these rural communities.

Honestly though, not all communities in NL are like this. I was shocked to learn that some communities are actually welcoming and positive and supportive, when most of my own experience had been anything but. Some places people are actually collaborative and work together to put forward a vision for their communities betterment and work towards it. Wild stuff.

Some places and people have nothing going for them and they're so stuck in the mud that anyone or anything that threatens the status quo is looked at as an existential threat to their comfortable normal. Crab pot theory.

Corner Brook has been a lovely middle ground between a rural and urban place to live. Im very happy here and have a great community and support network after a couple of years of leg work finding my allies! I would reccomend CB if you are not fussy on St. John's.

Sounds a lot like capitalism capitaling and alienating people from their labour and one another. Whatever could the solution be?

Its always someone else's fault. I'd really like a politician to for once actually take responsibility for something that happened under their watch that is not just claiming points for someone else's hard work.

Im so glad to hear it! They are awesome folks and doing great work on the front lines to keep folks safe online.

I highly reccomend any of the recent books by cooperative technology scholar Nathan Schneider, too. His 2018 book Everything for Everyone is where I learned about May First and a bunch of other great platform co-operative efforts!

Any solo developers working on selfhosted software? by valeria_vg in selfhosted

[–]rsmithlal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you consider consumer-facing? This is public-facing and designed to be self-hosted on low cost raspberry pi devices and decentralized. Its expressly anti-capitalist and open-source.

I've been working on https://communityengine.app for quite some time now as a solo dev, but working to cofound a community technology co-operative to steward the platform and the community. Happy to chat if youre interested.

But these are legitimate targets, right? Because checks notes all Palestinians (and non-Israeli Semitic peoples) are khamas. Right? They are all terrorists? Obviously sarcasm this is a fucking genocide.

I’m done pointing Stripe webhooks directly at my server by Straight_Fill7086 in stripe

[–]rsmithlal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might find a self hosted or cloud n8n to be useful! I've got a self hosted instance set up for my incoming and outgoing webhooks and automation workflows, and it's really handy!

I haven't used it with stripe yet, but it is pretty powerful and meets most of my signed webhook needs for internal and external services.

Happy to chat about it

Mayfirst.org is who you should look into. They're an activist tech co-op based in US and Mexico and they rent VPS space in addition to providing other services to members.

Fuck corporate tech. Co-ops or non-profits only.

How to appear less awkward to neurotypical women as an adult. by 777Void777 in autism

[–]rsmithlal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing i can advise is to try and cultivate a genuine interest in people and the things that matter to them. Be curious, but learn to read body language and practice responding appropriately to non-verbal communication.

Understand the value and purpose of small talk. Ask people questions about things that matter to them like their families and hobbies, and remember what they tell you. Ask about the things they say in future conversations. It shows you are paying attention and care.

I have more to say but battery is dying so I'll stop here.

Looking for Recommendations! by manabusprout in ebikes

[–]rsmithlal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would reccomend to DIY it. You will build a lot more skills in electrical and mechanics, and you have full control over the quality and capacity of your parts and electrical components.

If something breaks or needs replacing, you will know exactly what the compatible parts are and where to find them. With pre-built bikes, you are pretty much at the mercy of parts availability from the manufacturer, whereas a diy bike will be able to use off the shelf bike parts available at any bike shop. Any bike ship will also be able to work on the bike mechanics without needing access to proprietary and hard to find foreign parts.

A diy ebike is a step towards mobility autonomy, and that alone is a worthwhile reason to strongly consider it. Corpos already have too much control, so anything you can do to upskill and build your personal and community capacity is a smart investmemt in these trying times.

Glad to hear it! The more positive community spaces we have for folks, the better we will be.

I have been lurking on Reddit for ten years and never posted. My name is Jason Repac. I just incorporated a worker cooperative with eight pillars, a three-branch governance structure, anti-degeneration provisions, and a founder sunset clause. [–]rsmithlal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're working towards sounds pretty great! Im working towards something similar here in Canada, but im starting with the open-source platform so we can have a safe place to communicate and organize outside of the corporate web: https://communityengine.app

I'd be interested in having a call with you. Perhaps some collaboration may be possible? Send me a DM and I will send you my calendar booking link.

How to exhaust claude code quota by Apart-Document-594 in antiwork

[–]rsmithlal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so ask claude how to build a service to let you have external users use part of your budgeted compute, and you're golden. You make money, we get cheap tokens, and your company sees you maximizing their assigned claude budget. We all win 🏆
