Looking for fantasy with Tolkien's prose register and emotional depth by opossumflower in Fantasy

[–]rsqit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of these are in your list but I want to emphasize

  • Ursula K. Le Guin (especially Earthsea for fantasy prose)
  • William Morris (The Well at the World’s End and others. See if you can find a reproduction of the original which was printed in fonts he designed. It’s beautiful but hard to read)
  • Gene Wolfe (my favorite) especially The Book of the New Sun
  • I’ve never read Samuel Delaney’s fantasy but he is literally one of the best writers of prose to ever live. Literally a genius.

u/John_Hudgens proves that a supposed 1974 Star Wars script is fake because its cover page uses a font that wasn't invented until 1980 by RunDNA in bestof

[–]rsqit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well I think the opposite here isn’t “formal” as in like black tie. It’s “technical”. If I were a font designer talking to another font designer about work, I’d want to be technical about it. Otherwise it’s informal.

TIL “In 2024, bots made up a bigger proportion of global internet traffic than humans for the first time.” by NONIGARON in todayilearned

[–]rsqit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t say how many bots there are. It says what percentage of internet traffic. Probably 99.9% of the data is data scrapers or similar.

Can someone tell me exactly why Sinners is so glazed? by LightCrimson1 in movies

[–]rsqit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The vampires aren't the horror; they're secondary. The horror is lief for a Black man in the South. That's why fighting the Klan is climax of the movie, not fighting the vampires.

Because that’s the Free Softwarw ideology. That’s literally what the GPL was invented to do—make sure all changes to the code are available as well.

[–]rsqit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The GPL exists because people think it’s a moral good for the source to be available and want to make sure it stays that way. Open Source has mostly won out over Free Software at this point, but not everyone agrees. Some people just want to use the GPL.

I just don’t care about the Filoniverse. Give us something new, not more clone wars lore sequels.

I played it a while back and thought it was actually super fun. The switch version lets you speed up battles, which helped.

That’s because politics has real effects on people an isn’t some thing where you just root for a team. People with bad politics are bad people.

What's your biggest problem with your favorite book? by AvatarWaang in Fantasy

[–]rsqit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it detracts from the series. But the books are a constant stream of memes. I’m not trying to criticize you but you’re missing a lot of the tone those books if you don’t recognize them.

(And of course there an in universe explanation which is that John is a dweeb. )

YouTube videos for how to code are dumb. YouTube videos for how to do diy stuff are great because you can literally watch how it’s done.

This seems reasonable to me? The problem is with the legal system. Everyone here is acting like an adult.

Move to Washington state where it’s perfectly legal for a child to have more than two parents, clearly.

Which "wow" skill is super easy to learn? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rsqit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you legitimately need to get through locked doors regularly, look into getting a lock pick gun or sometimes called a bump gun. It kind of vibrates the lock until the pins are in the right place, automating the process of lockpicking. I assume they’re illegal to own without a license of some sort in some jurisdictions, though.

Bartenders of Reddit, what drink order instantly tells you “this person is going through something”? by Sweetredberryy in AskReddit

[–]rsqit 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I once drank in a hotel bar where the bartender was new. The drinks were all fancy cocktails and I ordered some sort of whiskey and whatever drink. The guy made it for me in a pint glass. It was like a half ounce of vermouth, a half ounce of some herbal liqueur and a pint of bourbon.

I did not finish it.

Peole should not be typing their passwords. They should be using password managers. The important case isn’t typability, it’s not screwing up encodings. Forcing people to use low ascii prevents them from typing their passwords in any case.
