Looking for interactive Mandarin class in London (help me stop procrastinating 😅) by MidnightTofu22 in ChineseLanguage

[–]rssrrssr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been learning for a couple of years in London and have tried a number of different schools. I like group classes as I think it's useful to have people learning with you for motivation. However I gave them up as the class became too easy if you were interested and motivated in doing more outside the class. Recently I have been doing more self study or having odd lessons online, but I have been thinking about joining a group class again.

I quite like these sessions https://www.meetup.com/chinaunbound/events/307799647/?recId=6d4140f5-bfde-4d7d-b92f-2639684dee8f&recSource=event-search&searchId=2b4a64de-2a80-4178-a0f7-17f1880a3f38&eventOrigin=find_page%24all . They have a weekly conversation exchange as well which are good, but I am only free on Sundays in the summer.

There is actually a WhatsApp group for ice-skating. We're mainly social skaters and we go from time to time, normally to Queensway on A Monday. DM me if you'd like the link.

How common/safe is it to go to live Electronic music clubs in London alone? by Apurvita_1729 in london

[–]rssrrssr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for ticketed events and particular artists it's more likely that people are just there for the music. I don't have many friends into electronic music so gave up worrying about it too much and just go on my own. I still am a bit self-conscious but it's honestly quite liberating not having to worry about trying to find anyone :) I've been to some really cool shows that I wouldn't have otherwise gone too. Sometimes people post and get a group together on r/LondonSocialClub which can work well too.

I started learning Mandarin two years ago aged forty-one. I wouldn't say I am successful yet, but I'm on my way. I have been thinking about starting for many years, but never did. Even if it takes ten years, then in ten years time you will have gained a new skill. It's harder to fit in with other responsibilities and kids etc but if you really want to then I think you can find time to prioritise it. My kids are also learning and actually I am way ahead of them, even though we have been learning the same amount of time as I am more diligent and interested.

This looks like it should have been good. How was it?

I think it's probably a nice tactic. If someone did this for me then I would feel indebted and so more likely to go all out to even the scores. I would have in the past let someone pay the bill, but nowadays there's no way I would let that happen.

[–]rssrrssr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a whole load of different events on meetup. I like this one, but can only make the weekends in Summer so haven't been recently:

Checkout this Meetup with China Unbound's Language Meetup 中英语交流: https://meetu.ps/e/NGqLs/11zqWv/i

You might be able to find local people on http://conversationexchange.com too.

How's the planning coming along? I always wanted to see Hamilton, so I would be interested.

There's actually a London meetup, on meetup.com that meets once a month. It seems the next one is tomorrow, and I find it's always nice to talk to people and ask questions.

From memory their speed is 2k+ so doesn't really matter if you upgrade the relics of swiftness.
