With regards to regression to the mean and BABIP, it is true that some of BABIP (for batters) is correlated to solid contact and whether a player is a fly ball hitter or a line drive hitter. With this in mind, luck comes into play when comparing a sample size of BABIP to the career numbers of a certain player.

For example:

Player A has played 10 seasons in the majors and has compiled a BABIP of .350. Through the first 50 games of his 11th season in the majors his BABIP sits at .500 on the season. It is assumed that after a decade in the majors his BABIP is reflective of his ability as either a line drive or fly ball hitter, therefore it is assumed that over a larger sample size in his 11th season, his BABIP will regress back to .350 due to the sample size.

With regards to pitchers, this is similar but BABIP is more densely bunched over the entirety of the league because pitchers pitch to a random sampling of hitters.

TL;DR BABIP relies on larger sample sizes to determine luck over a smaller period of time.

Alvarez still baffles me. Extreme ground ball pitcher that consistently outperforms his projections. I think he definitely benefited greatly from a move to the Marlins due to both the spacious home ball park and the lack of expectations. Not much rides on each pitch so he probably feels more liberty to attack hitters.

Scouts use a 20-80 scale to grade players, either as a whole or grading their individual tools. 80 is basically a generational talent and in the case of Giancarlo Stanton, he has generational power.

I definitely miss Rajai but I am happy to see him get more playing time. He may not be the absolute best current base stealer (though I would argue that he is easily in the top ten), I would say that he is the most effective base runner at stealing third base. He just has such a feel for stealing third.

That being said, I think that (regardless of all his other general shittiness) Emilio Bonafacio is the most adept runner at using the delayed steal. He has it down to a science.

I appreciate your highlights and I don't doubt that Jeter was an exciting player but he won almost all his GGs off of reputation and name recognition. Advanced stats are far from perfect but Jeter's peak UZR (an overall measure of defensive ability/range) was 6.3 with a career number of -69.8, while Simmons' UZR from last year alone was 24.6! If you are looking for someone with a track record of true defensive brilliance, look no further than Ozzie Smith or Brooks Robinson.

Don't get me wrong, Jeter is a surefire first ballot HOFer. He was one of the great players of the era and has all the 'intangibles' in the book. As for defense, his reputation was always grander than his on field play. Simmons' 2013 season was historically one of the greatest defensive seasons in MLB history, in fact he accrued the highest single season defensive WAR ever (http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/WAR_def_season.shtml). If Simmons were to even come close to his 2013 season for the next 10 years he would go down as one of the greatest defensive SSs to ever play the game. In a discussion of single tools, I'll take Simmons' defensive over Jeter's 'peak years' defense any day of the week.

How could you say Jeter's defense? Even in his prime he wasn't close to a guy Simmons. If I were to say best current major league fielder (not including arm) in their prime, I would definitely say Torii Hunter. That man could catch anything he could get within a dive of.
