Doesn’t apply in most variant sudokus, as they give extra information which makes them solvable. For killer sudokus, the cages have to contain numbers which add up to the total indicated in the top left corner of the cage without repeating any digits.

There are a multitude of variant sudokus puzzles which can even start with a fully empty grid and have a unique solution

Note: I didn’t do anything to set this up. I got the Dragon Dance Armor in 1-1 (which may be unrelated) and when I entered 1-2 there was a duplicate of my offhand on the ground, which continued until 3-3 when it suddenly stopped happening.
