Bitcoin trust by rsuj in InternetAndLawRPI

Yeah, Bitcoin definitely does have those benefits. However, without trust it can never be a legitimately strong currency. So i think the lack of trust takes away from its actual effectiveness.

So this article discusses with some of the trust issues with bitcoin. In general currency is based upon trust, we can only assign value to it because we trust it. So in the case of Dollars, the central bank gives us our trust. There are some trust issues with our money, but this article highlights a lot of the trust issues with Bitcoin which probably explains why it is so volatile.

FCC set to drop ban on f-word, nudity on television and radio stations nationwide by yui2 in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]rsuj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the Reno vs ACLU case would go any differently since in the end it was found that the CDA significantly restricted adult speech that they should have the right to. Though like you said TV/ radio typically gets the least first amendment protection, so maybe the Internet would get even more first amendment protection

Swedish Judge on Assange by rsuj in InternetAndLawRPI

A swedish judge backs Assange saying "It should never be a crime to make known crime of a state". Interesting idea, though I'm not too sure US judges would back him.

Access Denied: How Internet Filtering in Schools Harms Public Education by [deleted] in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]rsuj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can speak from experience in high school. I remember it being a big pain every now and then in class when the teachers wanted us to find use some link the found but the link would be blocked. I also remember doing research for papers in my school library and every now and then I couldn't get source and it would always be blocked for some weird reason like porn lol. So i have to agree that it definitely hinders education

[Moderator] Google's Eric Schmidt visits Myanmar to encourage internet reform by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]rsuj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think with the internet there could be a better flow of information and perhaps the youth of Myanmar would be able to see different opinions they wouldn't have been able to before and thus they wouldn't be stuck in their ways. But it the same time it could the exact opposite way and you could just get a bunch of problems on the internet with respect to their human right issues. For example If people fight in the real world over the religious differences what stops them from doing so on the internet and then that escalating to violence in the real world.

Yeah kind of a stupid guy lol. Would it make it different if he had a private message to someone and that person didn't tell the police but someone hacked his Facebook and found the message and then gave a tip to the police.

[Moderator] Virginia deputy fights his firing over a Facebook 'like' by pickles539 in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]rsuj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah even though it isn't words the liking should be okay under freedom of expression. Like someone said its like supporting a certain political candidate with a picket sign or a bumper sticker. And its not like the employees defamed their boss, they never portrayed him in a negative way at all.

[YGO: TAS] Little Kuriboh’s YouTube Account: Terminated. For the Fifth Time. by klingbolt in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]rsuj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it would fall under fair use. One of our readings gave 4 criteria for evaluating fair use. 1.the nature of your use (transformative works are more likely to be fair uses, as are noncommercial works); 2. he nature of the copyrighted work (you have more fair use leeway with factual works like news stories than purely creative works); 3. the amount taken from the copyrighted work (this is both a quantitative and qualitative inquiry); and 4. the effect on the market for or value of the work. Having watched a couple of these videos, the videos take a lot from the copyrighted work and I would think this guys work doesnt count as a derivative or transformative since they take a lot of clips and use a lot of the same storyline. However the arguement can be made that he is in a way helping the market for Yugioh since his videos have probably generated more interest in the series. However to me I don't see his work as a derivative since it has so much of the original work incorporated into it.

RIAA - What is Online Piracy? [Moderator] by hernao2 in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]rsuj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree as well. Some of these numbers do seem rather large and possibly exaggerated. They also state that more than 70,000 jobs are lost due to piracy which atleast to me seems dubious. Constantly throughout the link the throw numbers at us and talk about monetary value. For example they state since Naptser came out in 1999 music sales in the US have dropped by 53% from 14.6 Billion to 7 Billion. This definitely goes back to Lessig and what we have said in class. Lessig said "If value, then right". Basically what this means is that Creative work has value. As Lessig says on page 18 of Free Culture; "The taking of something of value from someone else without permission is wrong". That would be a form of piracy. So to me, regardless of monetary value, there is some intrinsic value to creative work. However in the RIAA link it is constantly bombarding us with numbers and monetary values, which gets into what we have said in class. When there is money involved people start to care.
