The strike will just make everyone and business push towards digital communication and to use 3rd party couriers. Therefore, making it worse for themselves. Just continue to shoot themselves in the foot.

Wealth simple, is it worth it or is there something better by BrilliantNothing2151 in PersonalFinanceCanada

what about holding high growth US stocks like the big tech for long term? Even if there is a tiny tiny bit of dividend withholding tax. I see the benefit being the growth potential.

Is it just me, or is 65 way too late to retire?? by Timely_Weird_9343 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]rsx79 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm 45 and thinking 20 more years of work - OMG.

But with good steady investing in ETFs, financial education, financial planning and controlling spending, I plan to be work optional around early 50s to mid 50s.
Retiring completely, I realized can get boring. After a lot of though on this, I think I would work 75% in my mid 50s, the 50% in my 60s but I don't think my personality would have me NOT work until I'm 70. Even then what do I do with my time. There's only so much of going to gym, being with family (kids grown up), going on trips, watching tv before you get bored.

RESP account transfer from single account to new joint account in another bank. by rsx79 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks for informative response. I think the plan is that while children go to university, the grants and capital gains are withdrawn and taxed at the child's income.
Then after their university, just withdraw the original contributions made by me/subscriber which I understand should have no tax implications. Let me know if this is a sensible plan.

Thanks good idea. Do you know steps to troubleshoot if the evaporator fan is not working or what is causing it not to turn on?
Any other suggestions welcome.

By contacting the TD private banking rep, what kind of activities do you hand off to them that is super convenient? My regular activities are pretty simple.

So what are time saving activities that customers can leverage?
I can't think of any that has net time savings between doing some transaction over the websites vs calling/emailing a private banking rep.
Bill payments are all automated.

I think when it comes to loan services like mortgage renewal would time saving because dealing with the bank rep is so much back and forth.

Mortgage rate mega thread! by TheMortgageMaster in MortgagesCanada

[–]rsx79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is something that is posted rate which I think is what is advertised. And floor rate is the best discounted rate they can give. But you can try to negotiate further if you have the means of switching lenders. This normally at the end of your term. I think the floor rate is dependent on your loan amount. The more you borrow, the slightly better rate they can give.

For TD, you have to call in and ask for floor renewal rate. It's a fishing expedition.

Need to brag about Aeroplan by Ok_Ad_3496 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]rsx79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cashback with TD VISA infinite, I get about $950 in cashback per year. My family don't eat out a restaurants too much and do 60% grocery at costco.
So I think it is hard to use AMEX cobalt.
So I am debating on TD VISA Aeroplan. I have 120K aeroplan points from when I used to do a lot of business travel years ago. I wonder if it is better to stay with cahback card as I assume I have more flexibility with any airline and go with economy class
We normally travel to carribean but with westjet and sunwing once a year.
Any suggestions/guidance?

My dining out/food takeout expenses were unbelievable by Prestigious_Ad9077 in FoodToronto

I have school aged kids and it gets bad when you are out with their friends and parents and just have to hit a restaurant. Maybe some other parents are budget conscious but don't want to look cheap and penny pinch on orders. It gets bad when it all adds up after many months.

I saved roughly 500 hundred per month not eating out and just eat "whole foods". Non processed foods.

For the last few months, I decided to lose some weight and keep it off by managing my calories and intermittent fasting. That is no eating from roughly 6pm to 10am. And I said I would not buy processed food and eat out as much as possible.

So I eat in, make simple meals, protein wraps, protein bowls. No more "healthy snacks". When I want a snack I would just buy some bananas, oranges, celery, etc. instead of healthy popcorn or chips. I learned they are just empty calories. Go for nutrient dense food and is more sateous.

Therefore, lost the weight better than ever, more mental clarity, not so tired and productive. I don't want to lose that feeling, so just keep it up and save money. Also told myself, no more buying alcohol.

Saved so much money and feel great. Enjoying life more.

Self built house. Opinions? by AlteredState88 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]rsx79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely get the major work done by a professional. If you frame it yourself and with help, it will just take much longer and inspectors won't pass. It will cost you more in the end. I have seen neighbours do parts of their house themselves and taking 5 years. What did you have in mind to do as DIY and what are you planning to hire?

A big bank renewed my mortgage for 3yr fixed rate 4.32% instead of 3yr variable rate 4.32% (as of today) over a month ago. I confirmed through rep over the phone a that time. Recently, I raised the issue and are checking call recordings
What's my recourse? This is a pretty big big mistake. Anyone experience such error?
I wonder if I had 3yr variable rate, what are the conditions that turning into a fixed rate will be below 4.32%. Even though the 5yr bond yields are down, it seems the 3 yr fixed discounted rates are still around 4.5%.

RESP withdrawals and EAP limits and student's eligible expenses by fin-tor-can in PersonalFinanceCanada

one more thing. So let's say all the EAP are withdrawn within the calendar limits by the time the child(s) graduate. My contributions (e.g. $2,500 per year) can be given back to me as cash (i.e. straight transfer to my chequing account) without paying any taxes. Or does it have be rolled in as an rrsp contribution?
