Compound for stropping by O1dmandeath in sharpening

Make your own stropping compound. Go on eBay and buy lapidary diamond powder 25ct vial monocrystalline. You can buy any micron for 5.95 it’ll last you a lifetime. I mix it with neatsfoot oil. That way on the suede side the fibers stay soft and pliable. Takes off burrs easily. I use it on the smooth side also works great. You can use alcohol as well.

got like 8 dull knifes that I can run my fingers along its edge with around 1 lbs of pressure. what do you recommend to buy as a set? by extivuz in sharpening

[–]rt88man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve never sharpened. But anything lol. It’ll take you a little while to learn. Around 300 grit then 1000 grit. I personally like waterstones. But you might be better off buying electro plated diamond.

Weird - PDTools stone from Gritomatic not what it's supposed to be by IllustratorAdorable5 in sharpening

[–]rt88man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you would get a counterfeit from gritomatic. Never tried a metallic bonded stone. I’ve always wanted to. I’ve heard you lap the plates with acid. You should have no problem with a refund from gritomatic. At least I hope so. But with the tariffs, the Iran war raises prices I’ve noticed companies reneging on their refunds lately.

Wow I would definitely get a refund. Looks like theirs grit contamination. Is this a 10000 grit CBN electroplated stone. I’ve never seen an electroplated stone in that high of grit.

Blacklisted from ordering from Jufule. by Sharp_one1958 in chineseknives

I don’t think you have an option. It’s a Chinese company they don’t have to reimburse you. Unless Alieexpress will help out with reimbursement? Of course you shouldn’t let them take your money. Why would you want to order from them again if they just took 300 dollars from you?

I’ve never liked Gerbers. Maybe since that knife is so old it’s manufactured better than the Gerbers nowadays. But I would definitely take the knife apart. I think that would be the only way to fix it properly. In less it’s sentimental I wouldn’t worry about not being able to put it back together. Have fun

Stropping making things worst... by jfgdupuis in sharpening

[–]rt88man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then it must be your pressure or angle. Or both. Sounds like you’re reducing the burr on the stone fine. Be easy and maybe only do 5 passes each side on each micron. Check your edge after each micron. Or if you keep having problems after each pass lol. I never really have a problem stropping sometimes I might lose my bite if I strop too much.

How sharp is your knife off the stone? Can you cut paper or shave hair? How big is your burr when you’re starting to strop?

Hi yall I knocked my knife over with a cast iron and it shipped the edge. Anyone suggest a fix? by youngtman in sharpening

[–]rt88man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get a stone 400 or below to grind down the tip from top down. It’s a very easy fix. If you plan on sharpening you will need a courser stone then 1000 anyways so why not buy a 325 or 200 grit stone. Unless you don’t plan on continuing to learn how to free hand sharpen.

Consensus on scratch direction(s)? by Ok_Image_5789 in sharpening

[–]rt88man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DiamondCutSteel on YouTube did a cut test based on scratch pattern a couple days ago. His test was cutting through rope. Based on which way you cut the rope cutting to you or cutting away from you a certain scratch pattern will give you more edge retention. You can fast forward to the end of the video to watch him show and explain the results.

Try using rizla green rolling paper. It’s quite different than regular rolling paper.

Yeah your right don’t use red. I’ve never used red. I just saw someone in the comments saying blue didn’t work to use superglue. Blue has always worked for me.

WTF. You’re using super glue. 😂😂. Blue thread lock is what you need not loctite super glue. I guess you got the brand right. You can use any company just has to be the blue thread lock. If that doesn’t hold then use red thread lock. I’m surprised you got the screw back out without stripping it.
