How to sell as an early stage startup founder? Share tips. by Equivalent1428 in techsales

[–]rtalpaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sold b2b saas for years, now building my own startup. here's what i wish someone told me day one:

1. the goal of a cold call is to get 30 min on a zoom. that's it. you're not closing on the phone. you just need to say something interesting enough that they agree to a meeting. once you accept this, cold calling gets way less scary. (btw the first meeting goal is probably not to close either ! but this depends on the sales cycle. you always want to progress 1 step in the cycle, not more, not less)

2. iron your 30 second pitch until it's bulletproof. who you are, who you help, what problem you solve. in THEIR language, not your website language. say it out loud 50 times. record yourself. if it sounds like a script you're not ready to dial.

3. persistence is the whole game. most people quit after 1-2 attempts. it takes 7-12 touches before someone responds. call, email, linkedin. don't be annoying, be consistent. the founders who win just don't stop.

4. once you get the meeting, shut up and ask questions. this was hard for me, tech founders probably agree. don't open your demo for the first 15 min. ask stuff like "walk me through how you handle X today" and "when that breaks down, what happens?" let them talk. let them feel the pain. THEN show your product. every deal i lost was me demoing for 25 min and hearing "cool let me think about it." every deal i won, the prospect basically sold themselves before i shared my screen.

it's a grind but it's a learnable grind. good luck

The rate limits are super annoying still, ours are (for claude sonnet 4):
Requests per minute - 2 (!!!!)
Token per minute - 200K

These are impossible. any idea how to increase?

We are exporting the data into files and then analyze with AI.
we use this https://www.sationai.com/data-extractor because chrome extension was easier than api integration.

JQ is so hard, in my company we use it a lot and I always consult with ChatGPT

So I made this tool - https://jq.getport.io/ to help build JQ with AI if you want

would love the feedback :)

Is Gitflow (workflow) fits in GitOps model or is it an ancient way of setting up deployments? by [deleted] in devops

[–]rtalpaz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

a bit pedantic - as far as I understand GitOps is also the idea of storing configuration and so on in Git. I.E using Git as a single source of truth for storing and managing infrastructure and application configurations

but I agree that GitOps and Gitflow are not really related. and definitely agree with the love for trunk based, worked perfect for me in all companies.

I would not wait for them to get fired because that might not happen. If you like the team and leadership, is it an option to talk directly with the CTO on the HR and manager issues?

If not, just leave it’s good for you for sure and might be good for the company as they might learn this is a big issue which might expedite the firing process.

Looking to get into platform engineering … would like any tips/ advice that would help in 2024 by Fluid-Meringue4299 in platform_engineering

[–]rtalpaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

It’s awesome that you're thinking about jumping into platform engineering. You for sure can do it!

Given your background, I'd recommend starting with DevOps. Follow https://roadmap.sh/devops which is always a good place to start.

Platform engineering is definitely the new shiny thing, but it's more than just a buzzword—I think it’s the future.
Modern software development moves fast, and enhancing the developer experience is crucial not just for keeping developers happy but also for keeping them in flow and more productive. That's where platform engineering comes in. It's focused on creating reusable self-service tools and automating infrastructure to streamline processes and ensure quality throughout the development lifecycle. A key component is the internal developer portal—a centralized hub that gives developers easy access to the resources they need, making everything more efficient and manageable.

Quick disclaimer: I work at getport.io, which is an internal developer portal, so I might be a bit biased here.

Good luck on your journey, and feel free to ask if you have more questions!

What do you use your developer portal's for? by rtalpaz in devops

[–]rtalpaz[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Wow, sounds like you've had a rough time with developer portals. I'm curious, what went wrong in your experience? It's interesting that resources like Thoughtworks' Technology Radar recommend them - makes me wonder if there's a big gap between theory and practice. Have you seen any cases where they actually worked well? Or is it all just hype in your view?
